Michael Jones Jr Florida Jury Recommends Death Sentence

Michael Jones Jr

Michael Jones Jr jury has recommended that the Florida man be sentenced to death for the murders of his wife and four children. According to court documents Michael Jones Jr would beat to death his wife Casei Jones with a baseball bat before he strangled his nine and four year old stepsons. Michael Jones Jr would then drown his 2 year old and 11 month old daughters. Michael Jones Jr would be arrested and charged with the five murders and would ultimately plead guilty.

Now after the punishment phase of the process the Florida jury has recommended that he be sent to Florida death row. The only thing now is whether the Judge agrees to the death sentence or sentences Michael Jones Jr to life without parole.

A jury this week recommended the death penalty for a 41-year-old man in Florida who confessed to killing his wife and their four young children.

A jury of nine men and three women on Thursday unanimously voted in favor of the death penalty for Michael Jones Jr., who brutally beat Casei Jones to death with a metal baseball bat before strangling his 9-year-old and 4-year-old stepsons to death and then drowning his 2-year-old and 11-month-old biological daughters, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

Michael Jones Jr pleaded guilty in December to four counts of first-degree murder in the children’s deaths and one count of second-degree murder in Casei’s death. The jury unanimously recommended death on all four counts of first-degree murder.

In Florida, defendants convicted of first-degree murder can be put to death if the jury unanimously recommends such an outcome, while the maximum penalty for second-degree murder is life in prison.

The decision will ultimately be left up to Fifth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Anthony M. Tatti, who has not yet scheduled a date for Jones’ sentencing hearing, according to the online docket.

According to court documents, on Sept. 14, 2019, deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check on Casei and the children requested by Casei’s mother, Nikki Jones. Jones said she had not seen or heard from her daughter or grandchildren in several weeks and was “concerned that Michael Jones had done something to them.”

Deputies arrived at the home in the 14000 block of S.E. 86th Terrace but initially said the residence appeared to have been vacant for several weeks. Once inside, deputies immediately “detected the foul odor of decomposition,” and the area was declared a crime scene.

Jones was initially detained on Sept. 15 in Georgia after the vehicle he was driving crashed into another car. When officers arrived on the scene he told them he had killed his wife and that her body was inside the vehicle. He later confessed to killing the children and led detectives to the locations where he discarded their bodies, police said.

“[I]n the following weeks, detectives believe he killed the two oldest children by strangulation and his two youngest children by drowning them,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release following the arrest.

The news release said he then left all of the bodies in the home for a few weeks before placing them into his van and keeping them there for the last two weeks before taking the victims to Brantley County, Georgia.

Jones has been detained at the Marion County Jail since he was extradited to Florida from Georgia.

Johnathan Jhovanni Hernandez More News

Florida man who last month was charged with possession of child pornography is now facing nearly 1,200 more charges after detectives discovered he had a large amount of child pornography.

Johnathan Jhovanni Hernandez, 23, was arrested on Dec. 29 on two counts of possession of child pornography, two counts of transmitting child pornography and one count of using a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony, the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office said. After a months-long investigation, his arrest came when officials received a tip from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

The sheriff’s office now says Hernandez is facing an additional 1,182 counts of possession of child pornography. He is also charged with four counts of possession of Beastiality images under a new law that went into effect in October.

“At that time, we told you the investigation was just getting started and there would likely be more charges. What we should have said was there would likely be A LOT more charges — like more than anyone in our county … ever,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook.

Hernandez was arrested for the second time on Tuesday after investigators went through his electronic devices seized during his arrest last month. He had been out on bond.

Detectives said his new nearly 1,200 charges resulted from looking through just one of his 15 devices.

“There is no telling how many charges he could face if detectives went through all the devices. Detectives say Hernandez’s collection of child porn is the largest they have ever seen,” the sheriff’s office wrote.

Hernandez is being held on a $2.4 million bond and has enough charges to keep him in prison for life potentially.

A second caregiver of a missing Oklahoma child has been taken into custody.

Officials say 4-year-old Athena Brownfield was reported missing around 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon near the 200 block of W. Nebraska.

Investigators say it all began when a postal carrier reported finding Brownfield’s 5-year-old sister outside her home. The postal carrier reported the incident to police and that was when they learned that Athena was missing.

“At this point the investigation into her whereabouts continues. We are actually getting tips from across Oklahoma as well as multiple other states,” said Brook Arbeitman, with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations.

On Thursday afternoon, OSBI agents announced the arrest of Alysia Adams, who was allegedly one of Athena’s caregivers at the time of her disappearance.

Adams was arrested on two complaints of child neglect.

On Friday, authorities confirmed that Adams’ husband, Ivon Adams, was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona.

He was booked in the Maricopa County Jail and is awaiting extradition to Oklahoma.

Court documents show he was arrested on a fugitive from justice charge.

The search continues for Athena.

“We’re still building that timeline [of her disappearance], and we’re talking to witnesses and neighbors and people in town,” Arbeitman said.

“Our analysts and our team of multiple law enforcement agencies are reviewing surveillance video from around town and again pursuing any tip that comes in, following it up and trying to identify any clues that can be used to locate Athena,” she added.

Alysia Adams More News

Police in Oklahoma are continuing to search for Athena Brownfield, a 4-year-old girl who was reported missing on Tuesday, after her 5-year-old sister was found walking alone near the town of Cyril by a postal worker.

Officers have arrested 31-year-old Alysia Adams, who had been caring for the two girls along with her husband, on suspicion of child neglect.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) said in a statement, posted to its’ Facebook page on Thursday: “Two days after being requested to assist with the Athena Brownfield missing child investigation, Special Agents from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) make an arrest in the case.

“Alysia Adams (10/5/1991) was arrested at the Grady County Sheriff’s Office at 4:12 p.m. on two counts of child neglect. The counts stem from the two sisters, four and five-years-old, who were in her and her husband’s care. The five-year-old was found Tuesday afternoon wondering outside Adams’ house on 225 W. Nebraska in Cyril. A postal carrier found the girl and notified police that she was alone.”

The search for Brownfield is continuing, with multiple law enforcement agencies and volunteers involved. Garbage disposal has been suspended in Cyril to avoid destroying any evidence.

The bureau added: “The OSBI is following every tip that is received, which are coming in from Oklahoma, as well as other states. In an effort to find clues as to Athena’s whereabouts, the trash service in Cyril was suspended. Additionally, analysts are reviewing surveillance video from around Cyril and seeking other evidence that can help locate Athena.

“The OSBI is being assisted by multiple law enforcement agencies, as well as volunteers who have given much of their time in the search for Athena.”

A booking photograph of Adams, wearing an orange jumpsuit, was released along with the statement.

On Wednesday, a missing and endangered person alert was issued by Oklahoma Highway Patrol, covering a 15-mile radius around Cyril.

The same day, OSBI spokesperson Brook Arbeitman said it has “yet to be determined” whether Brownfield has suffered any physical harm, adding the whereabouts of her parents are “part of the ongoing investigation.”

Arbeitman continued: “Right now, our top priority is locating her, and sorting out who’s responsible will come next. But we need to find this little girl.

“She’s a little child and she’s missing, and she’s on her own in the elements.”

Law-enforcement officers searching for Adams are being assisted by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, military personnel from Fort Sill, north of Lawton, Oklahoma, and volunteers, according to Arbeitman.

Police said volunteers are conducting a search grid, checking abandoned buildings and waterways, with both sniffer dogs and drones assisting them.

According to authorities, Athena is around 3 feet tall, with blue eyes and light brown hair, and was recently wearing a butterfly hoodie.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the OSBI at 800-522-8017 or [email protected].

On Friday morning, a spokesperson for the OSBI told Newsweek that the bureau had nothing to add, beyond what has been made publicly available.

EMTs Peggy Finley and Peter Cadigan Charged With Murder

Peggy Finley and Peter Cadigan

Peggy Finley and Peter Cadigan are two EMTs (emergency medical technicians) from Illinois who have been charged with murder after a patient in their care died. According to police reports Peggy Finley and Peter Cadigan would arrive at the Springfield Illinois home where Earl Moore Jr was suffering from hallucinations due to alcohol withdrawal.

For some reason Peggy Finley and Peter Cadigan decided to place Earl Moore Jr face down on the gurney for the trip to the hospital. When they arrived at the hospital Earl Moore Jr would be pronounced dead soon after. According to the coroner Earl Moore Jr would die from positional asphyxia due to being strapped face down and deemed that it constituted as murder.

Peggy Finley and Peter Cadigan More News

Two paramedics were supposed to help Earl Moore Jr. last month as he endured hallucinations brought on by alcohol withdrawal. Instead, they killed him, authorities said.

Police officers were the first to arrive to the house in Springfield, Ill., after receiving a call from a man in distress on Dec. 18. Finding Moore lying in his bed, incoherent but not in immediate danger, they radioed for paramedics to provide medical help. Peggy Finley, 44, and Peter Cadigan, 50, both emergency medical technicians with the private company LifeStar Ambulance Service, got there some 15 minutes later, around 2:20 a.m.

After arriving, Peggy Finley and Cadigan strapped Moore facedown to a gurney, loaded him into their ambulance and drove him to the hospital.

Less than an hour later, the 35-year-old was dead.

On Tuesday, the Sangamon County prosecutor announced that both EMTs had been charged with first-degree murder. The coroner had declared Moore’s death a homicide, determining it was the result of the paramedics strapping him facedown on the gurney and causing him to suffocate through “positional asphyxia.” With their training and experience, Peggy Finley and Cadigan knew that trapping Moore in a prone position would “create a substantial probability of great bodily harm or death,” State’s Attorney Dan Wright said Tuesday at a news conference.

They face 20 to 60 years in prison if convicted, he added.

D. Peter Wise, the attorney who represented both EMTs at a bond hearing on Tuesday, told The Washington Post that neither has a criminal history nor are they a danger to others.

“These are two good people that find themselves in a very odd criminal case,” Wise said.

LifeStar CEO Roger Campbell declined to comment.

The series of events that led to Moore’s death started in the early morning of Dec. 18 when he called 911, according to body-camera footage released by the prosecutors’ office.

Three Springfield Police Department officers arrived at 2:05 a.m., the footage shows. A woman who answered the door told the officers she recently started renting the place and immediately said that, despite the information they may have received, no one in her house had guns.

A severe alcoholic who hadn’t had a drink in four days, Moore was in the throes of withdrawal, she said. He was hallucinating — both seeing and hearing things that weren’t there. But he wasn’t violent, she said.

One of the officers asked if she thought he needed assistance.

“I think he needs help, yes,” she said.

Three officers entered the house, walking through the living room and kitchen before entering a back room where Moore was lying on a bed. It was 2:07. As ambient music played, one of the officers tried engaging him in conversation without success. About 30 seconds later, the lead officer made the call to request an ambulance.

For the next 11 minutes, the officers waited. Although they kept trying to talk with Moore by asking him to identify the president of the United States or even just himself, they got little out of him, the body-camera footage shows. During that time, Moore rambled, moaned and eventually rolled off the bed.

Then, Finley entered the room.

“This is Earl,” the lead officer told her. “Haven’t been able to get much out of him.”

Peggy Finley approached Moore and asked him his birth date. When he didn’t respond, she started yelling orders at him.

“Earl, sit up,”Peggy Finley said. “Sit up!”

Peggy Finley then dragged him several feet before repeatedly ordering him to sit up, the footage shows. When he didn’t, she kept yelling.

“I am not playing with you tonight!” she hollered, before disengaging.

For the next several minutes, officers tried to coax him to stand and walk to the front of the house. When that failed, they pulled him up by his arms, supporting him as they led him through the kitchen, living room and out the front door.

Cadigan was waiting just off the front porch with a gurney. Officers helped Cadigan place Moore onto it. Noticing he was hanging off slightly, Cadigan lifted him up and dropped his limp body back down onto the gurney. Finley wrapped a blanket around Moore, and then both EMTs strapped him onto the gurney as he lay facedown. They wheeled him to the ambulance and, at 2:26, lifted him into the back.

Forty-eight minutes later, Moore was pronounced dead at the hospital

Teresa Haley, president of the NAACP’s Springfield chapter, compared Moore’s death to that of George Floyd, who also died of positional asphyxia when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knees into Floyd’s back for 9½ minutes. Positional asphyxia occurs when the position of a person’s body prevents them from breathing.

“It was almost worse,” because the body-cam footage showed Moore struggling to breathe, she said, according to the Illinois Times.

“If this guy was already … having difficulties breathing, and then you put him on a stretcher facedown, I mean, it was hostile to see the video and how they treated him,” Haley said. “They literally threw his hands behind and just strapped him down. He couldn’t move if he wanted to.”
