California authorities have identified the suspect in Saturday’s mass shooting that killed 10 people and injured 10 others at a ballroom during Lunar New Year celebrations.

Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna identified the suspect as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran.

The identification came hours after the suspect shot and killed himself in a white van in Torrance, about 30 minutes from the shooting location in Monterey Park. Authorities said it was the same van the suspect had used to flee Saturday night’s shooting.

Law enforcement officials surrounded the van with tactical vehicles and bomb squad trucks earlier Sunday before entering the vehicle. Luna said several pieces of evidence – including a handgun – were found inside the van linking the suspect to the shooting scene.

Luna said no other suspects are at large and there was “no longer a threat” to the community. Authorities have not provided a motive saying the investigation is ongoing.

Seven people remain hospitalized, Luna said. He did not have the exact ages of the victims but said they all appeared to be over 50.

“I still have questions in my mind, which is: What was the motive for the shooter? Did he have a mental illness? Was he a domestic violence abuser? How did he get these guns and was it through legal means or not?” said Congresswoman Judy Chu, who spoke alongside Luna at Sunday evening’s press conference outside Monterey Park City Hall.

Luna said the shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park left five women and five men dead and wounded another 10 people. Then 20 to 30 minutes later, a man with a gun entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra.

The suspect entered the Alhambra club with a gun, and people wrested the weapon away from him before he fled, Luna said.

Monterey Park is a city of about 60,000 people on the eastern edge of Los Angeles and is composed mostly of Asian immigrants from China or first-generation Asian Americans. The shooting happened in the heart of its downtown where red lanterns decorated the streets for the Lunar New Year festivities. A police car was parked near a large banner that proclaimed “Happy Year of the Rabbit!”

The celebration in Monterey Park is one of California’s largest. Two days of festivities, which have been attended by as many as 100,000 people in past years, were planned. But officials canceled Sunday’s events following the shooting.

The shooting occurred at Star Ballroom Dance Studio, a few blocks from city hall on Monterey Park’s main thoroughfare of Garvey Avenue, which is dotted with strip malls of small businesses whose signs are in both English and Chinese. Cantonese and Mandarin are both widely spoken, Chinese holidays are celebrated and Chinese films are screened regularly in the city.

Ellen Gilland Murders Husband At Florida Hospital

Ellen Gilland Florida

Ellen Gilland is a woman from Florida who fatally shot her husband inside of a Daytona Beach Florida hospital. According to police reports Ellen Gilland would barricade herself inside of her husbands Daytona Beach hospital room and fatally shooting him. Ellen Gilland who would later tell police that the plan was to take her own life after killing her husband however she was unable to. After negotiations with police Ellen Gilland would turn herself over to authorities and was arrested. Ellen Gilland husband had been terminally ill and the couple planned the murder suicide.

Ellen Gilland More News

Daytona Beach police responded to a shooting at AdventHealth Daytona Beach Saturday morning.

According to police, responding officers discovered that a woman had shot and killed her terminally ill husband and confined herself to his room.

He was the only patient in the room, according to police.

“Upon arrival, our officers were directed to the 11th floor, where they encountered an elderly female who had apparently shot her terminally ill husband,” Daytona Beach police Chief Jakari Young said at a news conference.

Officers say staff and patients near the room were evacuated.

No one else has been injured.

“At no time were any of the hospital staff threatened or any other patients,” Young said.

Around 3 p.m. after negotiation, the wife was taken into custody.

Police have identified the victim as 77-year-old Jerry Gilland and the shooter as his wife, 76-year-old Ellen Gilland.

Both of them were from New Smyrna Beach.

The Daytona Beach Police Department said an investigation revealed the couple planned this weeks ago.

They say the pair made a pact to go through with a murder-suicide three weeks ago if the husband who was terminally ill continued to take a turn for the worse.

“Apparently because he was terminally ill, they had a conversation about it and they actually planned this approximately three weeks ago that if he continued to take a turn for the worst that he wanted her to end this,” Young said. “Obviously, we’re unsure how she brought that gun into the hospital, but this was planned.”

Police say the plan had been for the husband to do the shooting, but he was too weak.

They got a call about the shooting around 11:30 a.m. Saturday and it took hostage negotiators hours before the woman was taken into custody.

Meanwhile, the surrounding rooms had to be cleared in what police called a bit of a “logistical nightmare.”

“Because that 11th floor is made up of terminally ill patients so pretty much all the patients on that floor are on ventilators,” Young said.

He says they didn’t have room to evacuate the entire floor but says Gilland never left the room where the shooting happened.

“She never put the gun down, so she never specifically made a threat that she was going to shoot any of us, but she never put the gun down,” Young said. “So we would have to assume that you know if we were to rush in there, we didn’t effectively communicate that it could have turned into a shootout situation.”

So they used a device to distract her so she’d drop the gun.

“It’s called a flash bang that the SWAT team uses,” Young said. “They use it. It just makes a loud noise it’s like a — pretty sure you’re familiar with that. So they flew in a flash bang to distract her and luckily it worked.”

They also hit Gilland with a bean bag and she was ultimately taken into custody.

“It’s a tough situation, so her husband (was) terminally ill, so she was already in a depressed state just based on her husband being terminally ill and knowing that the end was near,” Young said.

She was at the Daytona Beach Police Department Saturday afternoon.

The police chief says she’s being transported to the Volusia County Jail.

Gilland is facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

AdventHealth released a statement Saturday afternoon on the shooting.

“We are devastated by the tragedy that unfolded at the AdventHealth Daytona Beach campus today, and our prayers are with those impacted. We are grateful for the Daytona Beach Police Department in helping ensure the safety of our patients, team members and visitors,” AdventHealth said in a statement.

Officials say a Kansas man has been arrested on murder and arson charges in relation to a house fire that killed three people, including two children.

The Topeka Fire Department said in a release Saturday that a Friday morning fire that killed three people has been determined by investigators to have been intentionally set. Officials say the incident is being investigated as a homicide that is domestic in nature.

The deceased were identified as Genny L. Fitzpatrick, 30, Peyton L. Tyler, 9, and Kourtney K. Tyler, 1.

Officials say 32-year-old Kyle J. Tyler was released Saturday from the hospital then transported for an interview. He was later arrested and booked for first-degree murder in the commission of a felony, aggravated arson, and aggravated child endangerment.

The suspect is being held at the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. There is no bond listed for him, WIBW reports.

Fire crews responded to a home in central Topeka around 5 a.m. Friday morning. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-story home. The fire also spread to a house south of the home where the fire originated.

A total of four people were inside the home when the fire broke out.

Crews pulled an adult and child from the structure and immediately started life-saving measures. Both were rushed to the hospital, where the child was later pronounced dead.

Officials say another adult and child were found unresponsive inside the home and later pronounced dead at the scene.

Topeka Public Schools confirmed later in the day that one of the children killed was Peyton Tyler, a fourth-grader at Lowman Hill Elementary.

“Peyton was a student that had many friends, and she is known for her positivity and her joyful spirit. She was loved by many and will be missed by all of the Lowman Hill students and staff,” said the school district in part in a letter to parents.
