Shamun Shaukat was about to close the Chevron gas station when he suspected a troubled 23-year-old man from Ohio was shoplifting and he confronted him, according to an arrest report the Miami police released on Sunday morning.

Jason Dyer-Mitchell took out a gun at about 12:30 a.m., on Saturday, at 1701 NW 54 St., in Liberty City, and started shooting — killing Shaukat, 42, and Shahbaz Hussain and wounding Elijah Shorter.

According to the police report, a hoodie helped detectives to identify Jason Dyer-Mitchell. It was black and had “POWER” in white font, and it was from the Powerhouse Gym Miami where he was a member.

Miami police officers arrested Dyer-Mitchell about five hours after the fatal shooting at a nearby sixth-floor apartment in the Liberty Village condominium building across the street from the gas station, according to police.

In the apartment, police officers found a fanny pack with a 9 mm magazine and an IWI Masada 9mm pistol, according to the arrest report. Dyer-Mitchell refused to talk to detectives.

Court records show Dyer-Mitchell had been on probation in Miami-Dade County until Sept. 11 after a felony case before Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez.

Miami Beach police officers arrested Dyer-Mitchell on Jan. 3, 2022, in South Beach after accusing him of placing a nail between his knuckles and punching a man with it in the face outside of a hostel.

Records show witnesses told Miami Beach police officers that Dyer-Mitchell was drinking straight out of a bottle of vodka and police officers found ecstasy and marijuana in his backpack.

Court records show Miami-Dade prosecutors dropped the marijuana possession charges.

The court withheld adjudication on the felony charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and possession of a controlled substance, and on the alcohol-related municipal ordinance, records show.

Court records show that without having to go to prison with a 2-year probation sentence, corrections released Dyer-Mitchell to the Camillus House for services. His probation started on June 22, 2022, and ended on Sept. 11.

After the gas station shooting, Miami-Dade correctional officers booked Dyer-Mitchell again at about 3:30 a.m., on Sunday, at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
