An Oregon, Ohio man has been indicted for allegedly shooting and killing his girlfriend. Police reports show he told everyone that the death was a suicide — and it all unfolded just days after the man was released from jail.

Ezekiel Ananias James, 20, of Oregon, is facing a series of charges in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Haiden Babiuch, also of Oregon. The two were in a romantic relationship.

James was indicted on Jan. 13 on charges of aggravated murder, two counts of murder and felonious assault.

Babiuch was shot and killed in a home on Crestway Drive in Oregon on Dec. 6, 2025. Police reports show the two lived at the home with James’ family.

The day of the shooting, James told his family and police officers that Babiuch shot herself, according to police reports.

When officers asked about what could have been troubling Babiuch, he told police everything was going alright in her life except for their relationship. He said Babiuch was worried about James leaving her, claiming she had cheated on James while he was in jail.

He also told investigators that he had brought the gun into the house, but he didn’t know how Babiuch would’ve known it was there, the police report said.

James was taken into the police station for questioning and was later released as the investigation continued.

In the days before the shooting, Babiuch planned to leave the home overnight but the couple had a conversation and she changed her mind, James’ family members told police.

Court records said James had been released from jail on Dec. 2, less than a week before the fatal shooting. He was previously convicted on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of dangerous ordnance.

James is expected to face a Lucas County Common Pleas judge in the coming days.
