Kenneth Law Case

A Canadian man accused of supplying a poisonous chemical to people who died by suicide is facing multiple murder charges.

Police in Canada have charged Kenneth Law, a 57-year-old former chef, with 14 counts of second-degree murder.

Kenneth Law was previously charged with aiding suicide in relation to deaths of people who had allegedly purchased the lethal chemical from him online.

British detectives have also linked Mr Law to 90 deaths in the UK.

In an emailed statement to the BBC, Mr Law’s lawyer, Matthew Gourlay, said his client intended to plead not guilty to the charges.

The murder charges announced by police on Tuesday mark an escalation in the prosecution of Mr Law in Canada, who has been the subject of a “very active and very complex” investigation involving 11 police agencies in the country’s largest province, Ontario.

Speaking on behalf of the multijurisdictional investigation, Simon James, an inspector with York Regional Police, said the new murder charges were related to a total of 14 victims in Ontario.

Mr James said that “evidence has come in that supports the charge of second-degree murder”, but declined to add further details as the investigation was ongoing.

Along with the murder charges, Kenneth Law faces 14 counts of aiding and counselling suicide in connection to the same Ontario deaths, for a total of 28 charges. He faces imprisonment for life if he is found guilty of second-degree murder under Canadian law.

Kenneth Law who remains in police custody, is also the subject of probes by police agencies in other parts of Canada and countries, including the UK.

Mr James said police in Ontario are cooperating with those international investigations.

Canadian detectives said Mr Law had run a number of websites offering equipment and substances to help people end their lives. Police believe he may have sent more than 1,200 parcels containing lethal substances to around 40 countries.

He was first arrested and charged in May with counselling or aiding suicide. In August, police brought additional counts against him, all linked to deaths that occurred in Ontario.

The ages of the people who died ranged from 16 to 36. Mr James said more than one victim was under the age of 18.

Many of Kenneth Law’s alleged victims were also based in the UK. There, the National Crime Agency (NCA) in London said Mr Law was known to have sent packages to 272 people.

The NCA, which is now investigating if any criminal offences were committed in the UK, said 90 of those recipients later died, though they could not confirm that a toxic substance was the direct cause of each death.

One individual died after police had carried out welfare checks on all the addresses which received a parcel, the agency added.

A spokesman for the NCA said: “This investigation will explore viable leads that help us identify evidence of crimes committed in the UK or against its citizens.”

The news of the charges were welcomed by David Parfett, whose 22-year-old son Tom bought the chemical from Mr Law and ended his life in October 2021.

“It sends a signal to other people who encourage vulnerable people to self harm and provide suicide kits that they’re not beyond the law,” Mr Parfett told the BBC.

And he said there are wider lessons for the authorities on what more needs to be done to protect people online.

“Actions like encouraging others to kill themselves that would be prosecuted in real life are tolerated online. That has to stop,” he said.

While this is a significant moment for many of the victims’ families, some said they still have outstanding concerns.

They worry there are other sellers out there who have taken Mr Law’s place and are still selling the poisonous chemical he allegedly supplied. Many also feel the UK government has not done enough to stop this type of crime.

Mr James of York Regional Police said one major challenge is that some of the websites used by Mr Law are based in countries outside of Canada, where Canadian law does not apply.

Families of victims said they also want action taken against those who set up and run a pro-suicide forum which encourages and instruct the vulnerable how to die. The BBC reported on the forum in October and even confronted one of its founders, who claimed he is no longer involved.

Many of the dead found out about Kenneth Law and other sellers through the forum, which the BBC is not going to name.

They followed detailed instructions posted there on how to end their lives.

Pierre Ny St-Amand Charged With Murder In Laval Bus Crash

Pierre Ny St-Amand

Pierre Ny St-Amand is a city bus driver in Laval Quebec who has been charged with 2 counts of murder for a crash that killed two young children. According to police reports Pierre Ny St-Amand was driving a city bus when he slammed into a daycare in Laval Quebec leaving 2 children dead and many more injuries. According to witnesses Pierre Ny St-Amand was driving between 30 to 40 kilometres per hour (approx 23 mph) when he slammed into the day care. Pierre Ny St-Amand would emerge from the bus completely naked and described as being out of his mind. Pierre Ny St-Amand has worked for the city for 10 years with no driving incidents.

Pierre Ny St-Amand More News

Two children are dead and six others were injured after a city bus crashed into a daycare on Wednesday morning in Laval, Que.

The driver, a 51-year-old man who was employed with the Société de transport de Laval (STL), was arrested and is facing reckless driving and homicide charges. Several sources told Radio-Canada that the suspect is Pierre Ny St-Amand.

Around 8:30 a.m., a bus from the Société de transport de Laval (STL) hit a daycare in the Sainte-Rose neighbourhood on Terrasse Dufferin, according to Laval police spokesperson Erika Landry. Landry said two children are confirmed dead and six others are injured and in hospital, but they are expected to survive.

The Garderie Éducative de Sainte-Rose is located on that street.

A neighbour who witnessed the crash said he and a group of parents tried to rescue children pinned under the bus and managed to subdued the driver, who was acting erratically.

According to Urgences-santé, 12 people needed medical care, eight others were transported to area hospitals.

Dr. Marc Girard, the director of professional services at Sainte-Justine Hospital, said at an afternoon news conference that the hospital received four victims, all preschool-age children, two boys and two girls.

The children were conscious when they arrived at the hospital, but were suffering from various traumatic injuries, Girard said. They are now recovering and in stable condition, he said.

Hamdi Ben Chaabane, who lives in the neighbourhood and witnessed the crash, said the bus was travelling 30 or 40 kilometres per hour when it struck the daycare.

“From what I saw, it wasn’t an accident,” he said.

After the bus struck the daycare, the driver emerged and began acting erratically.

“He opened the door. He took off all his clothes. He was totally naked,” Ben Chaabane said. “We don’t know why he did that. We dove on him. We tried to subdue him.”

He described the driver as being “in another world.”

“It was a nightmare. It’s horrible. He didn’t stop yelling. He wasn’t saying words,” Ben Chaabane said.

When the group tried to pry children out from underneath the bus, Ben Chaabane said they reached one child, who was only lightly injured, but were unable to reach a girl who was stuck deeper beneath rubble.

He said they continued trying to reach the trapped children until firefighters arrived and told them to leave because the roof of the daycare was caving in.

According to the Stéphane Boyer, the mayor of Laval, the person who was arrested has worked for the STL for 10 years  but didn’t have any prior incidents on his record.

“There is a hypothesis that this was an intentional act but it will have to be confirmed by the investigation,” Boyer said, adding that it was unclear if the suspect had any connection to the daycare.

“It’s chaos,” said Julia Moreno, a mother whose child was in the daycare when the bus struck it. “There are injured children. It’s terrible.”

Nathalie Vaillancourt, another mother whose child was inside, said the bus destroyed the front facade of the daycare. Both mothers said their children were unscathed.

City buses don’t normally drive past the daycare, which is on a quiet side street, with no STL bus stops.

Urgences-santé dispatched seven ambulances, a “tactical medical vehicle” — which responds to unusual medical situations, often alongside police — and a rapid response team.

“It’s terrible what happened this morning in Laval,” Premier François Legault told a group of reporters at the National Assembly. “All my thoughts are with the children, with the parents and with the employees.”

Legault said Public Security Minister François Bonnardel, Family Minister Suzanne Roy and Christopher Skeete, the MNA for the Sainte-Rose riding, will be in Laval to assess the situation.

Laval’s mayor said psychologists would be available for those affected.

“It’s a tragic act,” Boyer said. “Obviously there are lots of parents right now wondering if their child was affected. I really want to be there for the families, show support.”

The STL said in a statement it was devastated by the “tragedy in Laval.”

“Our hearts go out to the families and employees affected by this tragedy,” the statement said. “The Service de police de la Ville de Laval is currently conducting an investigation in which we are actively collaborating.”

Robert Robin Cropearedwolf Wanted In Douglas Michael Finlay Death

Robert Robin Cropearedwolf

Robert Robin Cropearedwolf is a man from Toronto, Ontario, Canada who is wanted in the death of former journalist Douglas Michael Finlay. According to police reports Robert Robin Cropearedwolf would shove Douglas Michael Finlay and the former CBC journalist would take a violent fall and ended up dying from his injuries. The Toronto police would issue an arrest warrant for Robert Robin Cropearedwolf for manslaughter. Toronto police believe this was a random attack

Robert Robin Cropearedwolf More News

Toronto police have identified a suspect in an apparent random assault on the Danforth that resulted in a former CBC journalist dying from injuries sustained in the attack.

Police were called to the area of Danforth and Jones avenues on the afternoon of Jan. 24. Investigators said a male suspect was walking along the Danforth when they encountered another man and assaulted him. The victim fell to the ground and sustained serious injuries.

Toronto’s homicide unit confirmed on Friday that longtime CBC radio producer, 73-year-old (Douglas) Michael Finlay, died on Tuesday due to medical complications stemming from what officers called a “random assault.”

The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Robert Robin Cropearedwolf of Toronto, fled the scene. He’s wanted for manslaughter and is being urged to turn himself in.

Police said on Friday that officers believe both men did not know each other, noting it’s likely a random attack.

“It’s a chance encounter on the Danforth resulting in an assault,” Toronto homicide detective Jason Hillier said.

A man with the same name, Robert Robin Cropearedwolf, who was 38 at the time, was wanted in 2017 for a series of break-and-enters in Toronto that netted over $2 million in jewelry, cash and electronics. Toronto police have not confirmed whether it’s the same man.

The assault on Finlay was the latest in a series of violent attacks in Toronto, which prompted the city’s mayor to call for a nationwide summit last week to address the mental health crisis in municipalities across the country

A former employee with the CBC told CityNews that the victim of the assault was released from the hospital following the attack and then suffered a cardiac arrest at home.

Cathy Perry, the network’s executive director of newsgathering and operations, said Finlay “will be remembered as an exceptional storyteller, documentary-maker and editor.”

“If you worked on a documentary with Michael, you were experiencing the pinnacle of the craft.”

Malcolm Morrison, a former reporter at The Canadian Press and a longtime friend of Finlay, said he and everyone who knew Finlay were “absolutely shattered” upon hearing the news of his death.

“This is very, very unfair, and what to say, except the guy deserved a lot better and all of his friends, we all just hope that the person who did this gets caught before he does something like this to somebody else,” he said.

OPP Constable Grzegorz Pierzchala Shot And Killed Other News

Murder charges were filed Wednesday against two people arrested after an Ontario Provincial Police officer Grzegorz Pierzchala was shot to death while on duty.

Court documents show that Randall McKenzie, 25, and Brandi Crystal Lyn Stewart-Sperry, 30, each faces one count of first-degree murder. The two are set for a court appearance Jan. 17.

8 Teen Girls Charged In Swarming Murder In Toronto

Toronto

Eight teen girls have been charged in a swarming murder that took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. According to police reports the eight teen girls, three 13- year-olds, three 14-year-olds and two 16-year-olds, were apparently after a liquor bottle and when the victim stood up for his friend he would be brutally attacked ending in his death. Toronto police have charged the eight teen girls with second degree murder. Due to Canadian law regarding juveniles the longest sentence they can receive is a life sentence where parole eligibility is after seven years. Again due to Canadian laws the identity of the eight teen girls will not be made public

Toronto murders have been in the global news over the last few days with the last being a disgruntled condo owner who would shoot and kill five people before being shot dead by police. Of course to put this in perspective Toronto is the fourth largest city in North America behind Mexico City, New York City and Los Angeles. Toronto has had a total of 68 murders this year.

Swarming Murder In Toronto More News

An alleged “swarming” attack in Toronto started when the eight teen girls charged in the slaying tried to take a liquor bottle from the victim and his friend, the friend says.

That witness, who CBC Toronto has agreed not to name because they belong to a vulnerable community, said she was smoking a cigarette with the man outside a downtown shelter early Sunday when the group of teens approached them and attempted to take her alcohol.

The 59-year-old victim, who police have not publicly identified, told the girls to leave the two of them alone, the woman said.

“He protected me,” she added.

That’s when the group of girls started to punch him repeatedly, she recalled. Frightened by the violence, she walked away while one of the girls followed her. She said she could see lots of blood.

“Bleeding, bleeding, bleeding. I didn’t know if they had a knife or what. I was just scared,” she said. “I think they stabbed his belly.”

She said she went into the shelter and brought him water afterwards. “I didn’t know he would die,” she said.

In an interview Wednesday, Toronto police Det.-Sgt. Terry Browne said investigators believe there was an attempted theft — “likely of a liquor bottle” — during the initial phase of the deadly encounter.

“I don’t want to expand on that because we don’t have all the moving parts right now. But we do believe that does form part of the narrative involved in this,” he said.

The attack happened around 12:15 a.m. ET near the corner of York Street and University Avenue, just steps from Union Station. The victim was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Browne, who has been a homicide detective for 19 years, called it a “shocking” killing and said it is unlike anything he’s investigated before.

“I can’t recall a situation where eight females have been involved in something like this.

At a news conference Tuesday, Browne said the victim was beaten and stabbed by the group, which included three 13- year-olds, three 14-year-olds and two 16-year-olds. All eight have been charged with second-degree murder. Their identities are protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Browne said police chose to charge all eight with second-degree murder because each girl “played a role” in the slaying.

“All eight were together. All eight were involved,” he said Wednesday. ” I won’t say what each one individually did, but all eight were together and participating in this event, which is disturbing.”

Police are operating under the assumption that the girls met on social media, Browne said, but it’s not yet clear how or why they ended up downtown late Saturday and into Sunday morning. They all live in different parts of the city, he said.

Three had had “prior contact” with police, he added. Investigators have no evidence that the victim was known to them, Browne said

Police have spoken to the parents of each of the teens, he told CBC Toronto.

“As you can probably imagine, everyone was shocked. Probably like getting hit by a Mack truck.”

The fatal swarming was preceded by an earlier incident involving the girls that Browne only described as “criminal activity.” Police arrested all eight when they responded to a third incident shortly after the swarming and “pieced together the dots” that the group had been involved in all three.

All of the teens appeared in court on the weekend, with further court appearances scheduled for Dec. 29.

Browne said police wouldn’t describe the girls as a gang at this point, but investigators are calling the incident a “swarming,” which he said normally involves selecting a target to victimize. Swarming was more prevalent in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Browne said, and “primarily involved young adolescent males finding themselves in conflict.”

As of Wednesday morning, police were still trying to contact the victim’s elderly parents, he said. Once that has been done, his identity will be released publicly.

Browne said the man had only recently entered into the city’s shelter system and that he had supportive extended family in the area.

“I wouldn’t necessarily call him homeless, just recently on some hard luck,” Browne said.

His death was the 68th homicide in Toronto in 2022.

Toronto Mayor John Tory said in a statement that he is “deeply disturbed” by the details of the case.

“Everyone in our city deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. I am so saddened to know that a man has lost his life in this way,” he said.

“I am extremely troubled by the young age of those accused and by the number of people allegedly involved in this murder. My thoughts are with this man’s friends and all those who knew him as they mourn his loss,” he added.

Police are appealing for information from anyone who was in the area of the attack between about 10:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.
