A U.S. women’s basketball superstar is being held in Russia after allegedly being caught with illegal drugs at an airport in Moscow.

The basketball player, identified by Russian media outlet Lenta as Brittney Griner, 31, was flagged at Sheremetyevo Airport sometime last month after flying in from New York. Russian customs officials claim she was carrying vaping equipment with cannabis oil cartridges, which are illegal in Russia. She reportedly could face 5 to 10 years in prison.

“As a U.S. citizen was passing through the green channel at Sheremetyevo Airport upon arriving from New York, a working dog from the Sheremetyevo Customs canine department detected the possible presence of narcotic substances in the accompanying luggage,” the Russian Federal Customs Service said in a statement. “The customs inspection of the hand luggage being carried by the U.S. citizen confirmed the presence of vapes with specifically-smelling liquid, and an expert determined that the liquid was cannabis oil (hash oil), which is a narcotic substance.”

It was not clear when last month Griner was arrested, but the development comes as Russia is increasingly isolated from the west following its invasion of Ukraine. Last month, the WNBA and the league’s players association warned many of its players, who compete in Russia, Ukraine, and various European nations during their off-season, to get out of the war zone.

“We have been in constant communication with our members and their representatives for several weeks, and we’ll continue to stay abreast of current events,” the league statement read. “The league has also been in contact with WNBA players who are in Russia, either directly or through their agents. We will continue to closely monitor the situation.”

Griner, who is listed at 6-foot, 8-inches tall and was a three-time All-American at Baylor University, has starred for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury as well as UMMC Ekaterinburg, a team based in Yekaterinburg, Russia, since 2015. The team competes in the Russian Premier League and FIBA Europe’s EuroLeague. Griner helped the U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team win gold medals at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Griner is so accomplished that when she came out of college in 2013, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban floated the idea of drafting her to play in the NBA.

Sherri Papini Charged For Faking Kidnapping

Sherri Papini

Sherri Papini is a woman from California whose kidnapping made national news as when she was found she was branded and had a broken nose when she was found tied up on the side of the road, turns out the whole story was fake. Sherri Papini who told authorities that she was kidnapped by two Hispanic women at gun point and that she was tortured during the time that she was missing. Sherri Papini would even give the FBI two full descriptions of her alleged assailants. However when her family and friends were worried sick about her disappearance Sherri Papini was living it up with her boyfriend in Costa Mesa and would injure herself to make her story bulletproof. Of course when the FBI comes into play and learns that they have been played by this woman people were calling Super Mom you are going to end up with some serious Federal charges. So far Sherri Papini has been charged with making false statements to a federal law enforcement officer and engaging in mail fraud and is facing 20 years in prison.

Sherri Papini More News

Officials announced that 39-year-old Sherri Papini of Redding was arrested Thursday on charges of making false statements to a federal law enforcement officer and engaging in mail fraud.

According to the criminal complaint filed in this case, on Nov. 2, 2016, Papini was reported missing, and extensive searches were conducted for her in Shasta County and California as well as in several other states.

The Department of Justice says at that time, Papini told law enforcement officers and others that she had been abducted and held by two Hispanic women at gunpoint and held against her will. She also provided details of the alleged abductors to an FBI sketch artist. Based on her account, law enforcement agencies were on the lookout for Hispanic women matching Papini’s description. The investigation eventually showed, however, that this was a false narrative Papini fabricated.

The DOJ says that in truth, Papini had been voluntarily staying with a former boyfriend in Costa Mesa and had harmed herself to support her false statements.

“When a young mother went missing in broad daylight, a community was filled with fear and concern,” said U.S. Attorney Talbert. “Shasta County Sheriff’s Office immediately began investigating, calling on the assistance of the FBI. Countless hours were spent following leads, all in an effort to bring this woman back to her family. Three weeks later, she was found 146 miles south of where she disappeared, and the focus went from trying to find her to trying to find her abductors. Ultimately, the investigation revealed that there was no kidnapping and that time and resources that could have been used to investigate actual crime, protect the community, and provide resources to victims were wasted based on the defendant’s conduct.”

According to the DOJ, in an interview conducted by a federal agent and a Shasta County Sheriff’s Office detective in August 2020, Papini was warned that it was a crime to lie to federal agents. She was presented with evidence that showed she had not been abducted. Instead of retracting her kidnapping story, Papini continued to make false statements about her purported abductors. In addition, Papini caused the California Victim’s Compensation Board to pay victim assistance money based on her kidnapping story. From 2017 through 2021, Papini’s request for victim assistance caused approximately 35 payments totaling over $30,000, including for visits to her therapist and for the ambulance that transported her to the hospital after her return.

“The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office is very thankful for the partnerships with all of the local, state, and federal allied agencies that have been involved with this investigation for the last five-plus years,” said Shasta County Sheriff Michael Johnson. “The arrest of Sherri Papini was made possible by the outstanding hard work of a multitude of agents, detectives, DOJ criminalist, forensic analyst, crime scene investigators, and support staff members that were assigned to this investigation. Everyone involved in this investigation had one common goal; to find the truth about what happened on Nov. 2, 2016, with Sherri Papini and who was responsible. The 22-day search for Sherri Papini and subsequent five-year search into who reportedly abducted her was not only taxing on public resources but caused the general public to be fearful of their own safety, a fear that they should not have had to endure. The Sheriff’s Office has appreciated the support and patience from the citizens of Shasta County and abroad. This investigation has always been a priority to get solved for the Sheriff’s Office as well as for our investigating partners at the FBI and the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Forensic Services and Bureau of Investigation.”

Per the DOJ, If convicted of making false statements to a federal law enforcement officer, Papini faces a maximum statutory penalty of five years in prison and a fine up to $250,000. If convicted of mail fraud, she faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Any sentence, however, would be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables. The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Police in Battle Creek are continuing their search for a missing woman’s body.

The search comes after the man accused of killing his girlfriend pleaded no contest to second-degree murder, Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert confirmed to FOX 17.

Derek Horton was suspected of killing Amber Griffin and burying her body in 2020.

As part of the plea agreement, the open murder charge was dropped, Gilbert confirms. He also says Horton agreed to lead investigators to Griffin’s body.

The Battle Creek Police Department says they were unable to locate Griffin after a search of an area on Battle Creek’s north side on Wednesday. Police resumed the search Thursday morning.

FOX 17 spoke with Amber Griffin’s mom on Wednesday. She says she searched that area several times in the past

Prosecutors say the plea deal will be dropped if police are unable to find her.

Derek Horton Other News

Battle Creek Police confirmed they found the likely remains of Amber Griffin following a two-day search Thursday afternoon.

The skeletal remains were dug up three feet underground in the woods south of Waubascon Road between Limit Street and Hubbard Street around 1:45 p.m. Thursday. Griffin’s boyfriend, Derek Horton, led police to the body as part of a plea deal struck on the second day of his murder trial for Griffin’s killing.

“It’s very gratifying, it’s something we wanted to accomplish from the beginning,” Battle Creek Police Lt. Joel Case said during a Thursday afternoon news conference.

Officers were taken to Griffin’s apparent after Horton, 27, agreed to reveal her body’s location as part of a plea deal.

Horton pleaded no contest to second degree murder Wednesday, which carries a minimum sentence of 15 years. The plea deal is contingent on finding Griffin’s remains. Griffin was reported missing by her mother on June 24, 2020.

Case said Horton pointed to four locations police sectioned off as part of their search efforts. Police said they discovered the remains at the third site they searched.

Excavators and two Michigan State Police K-9 cadaver dog’s were brought in to speed up the search efforts Thursday.

“Even when we brought (Horton) out there things don’t look exactly the same. It’s not like you can say, ‘X marks the spot right there.’ Unfortunately with the fact that it’s been almost two years now, you have leaves that have fallen, you have different foliage, you have two winters that have passed now,” Case said

Medical examiners still need to confirm the remains they found are Griffin’s. Police said those will be done with DNA or dental records since the body is decomposed.

Investigators said they notified Griffin’s mother about the developments. “She’s emotional, but she’s happy,” said Case.

Case said finding Griffin’s body and a successful prosecution for her murder were the results they were looking for from the beginning.

In 2020, police theorized Griffin was buried, but didn’t know where. Dozens of searches were conducted prior to the ones conducted Wednesday and Thursday. Volunteer groups, search and rescue teams, helicopters, drones and cadaver dogs were all deployed with no luck.

Investigators had previously searched an abandoned home at 157 Waubascon Rd. in 2020 after Griffin was reported missing. At that time, police said they found a pair of women’s pants with Griffin’s blood on them.

Police also located drag marks that took them to a nearby trail where investigators found a receipt for a shovel. The receipt was dated June 23, 2020 at 2:31 p.m., about 12 hours after prosecutors said a 911 call was made from Griffin’s phone.

Griffin was last seen alive while at a house party on Oneita Street with Horton. Prosecutors said Griffin made a 911 call from a home at 266 Oneita Street around 2 a.m. June 23, 2020, but the call was quickly disconnected.

Prosecutors claimed the 911 audio recoding captured Horton assaulting Griffin following an argument. Griffin’s blood was found on all three levels of the home, police said.

The Oneita Street home is owned by the same man who owned the abandoned property on Waubascon Road.

Haggerty, 29, was charged with tampering with evidence and lying to police in July 2020. Police said Haggerty drove Horton to a hardware store on June 23, 2020 to buy the shovel police believe Horton used to bury Griffin’s body.

Haggerty is set to appear for a pre-trial hearing in Calhoun County District Court April 12.

Case declined to comment on Haggerty or anyone else’s involvement in helping Horton.

Brianna Williams More News

Brianna Williams pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the disappearance and death of her 5-year-old daughter, Taylor Williams, on Thursday. Williams faces 20 years to life in prison.

The 5-year-old girl’s remains were found Nov. 12, 2019, in a wooded area of Marengo County in rural Alabama, six days after her mother, a former Navy Petty Officer First Class at NAS Jacksonville, reported her missing to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Court documents filed by the State Attorney’s Office accuse Williams of torturing, maliciously punishing or caging her daughter sometime between the last time the girl was seen alive in April 2019 and Nov. 6, 2019, when the girl was reported missing.

Evidence released in the case as part of discovery suggests investigators found possible bloodstains in six places in the family’s apartment, including the interior of a closet. Investigators said they found soiled children’s clothes, fecal matter and soup cans with small openings.

Also inside the apartment, investigators said they found the scent of decay, similar to the scent they said was noticeable in the trunk of Williams’ Honda Accord. Inside the vehicle, court documents say, investigators also found maggots, fecal matter and soiled clothes.

Williams faces the tampering charge because investigators suspect the girl’s body was dumped in Alabama before Williams reported her missing. Records show Williams posted a Craigslist ad seeking help moving out of her apartment hours after she returned from Alabama.

A sentencing date has not been set.

Markeith Loyd More News

A judge has sentenced Markeith Loyd to death for the murder of Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton.

The jury recommended death, but the judge made her final decision Thursday morning.

In November, Loyd was found guilty of murder in the death of Clayton, along with aggravated assault and carjacking.

During his trial, Loyd told the judge he never meant to kill Clayton at the Walmart on Princeton Avenue in January 2017. He said she panicked and fired her gun at him.

Loyd was already facing life in prison in the death of his pregnant ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon.

After the decision, Sheriff John Mina and the Orlando Police Department released statements.

Mina said he was pleased with the decision, adding: “He has caused so much suffering to the families of Lt. Debra Clayton, Sade Dixon, and DFC Norm Lewis.”

The Orlando Police Department said in part: “Although nothing can undo the heartache created by the defendant’s heinous actions, we hope that this brings solace to our community, knowing a dangerous murder will face the highest penalty provided by law.”

“Though this decision may bring a sense of closure, we will never forget Debra’s sacrifice to Orlando Police Department and the City of Orlando.”

Earlier in the week, Loyd was involved in an incident involving corrections officers at the Orange County jail last week, officials say.

County officials say the involved officers sought medical attention and are recovering.

A disciplinary report was generated and the incident is under review. No other details were immediately released.

A judge ruled last week that Loyd is competent to proceed with sentencing for the 2017 murder of Clayton.
