Pennsylvania man who murdered his mother and took photographs with her body was sentenced to 20 years in prison after receiving a plea deal much of the family opposed.

David Sumney, 33, was accused of torturing his mother Margaret, 67, and murdering her in her home in 2019.

He had documented the crime by taking 277 photos, including several selfies of blood smeared on his face and his mother’s body.

Sumney secured a plea deal in August that dismissed charges of first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse, leaving him with only a single count of third-degree murder.

Since he has been behind bars since 2019, he could be released in as little as 17 years.

“I cannot believe I would let myself get in such a state where I could do something so bad, so horrible. I cannot believe what I did, that I killed my own mother,” Sumney, said during his hearing on Thursday in Allegheny County Court. “I cannot stop thinking about it. I think about it every day. I’m sorry, but sorry doesn’t cut it. I handled things as badly as a person could have.”

“To my family, to my sisters, and my aunts, I know it’s impossible to forgive me. I don’t forgive myself. I just want to let them know I am truly sorry,” he continued.

Sumney’s defense asked for a sentence of seven years because he “expressed remorse” and attributed his crime to his drug and alcohol use.

Margaret’s family, meanwhile, pushed for a harsher sentence than he ultimately received

Her older sister, Mary Ellen, called Sumney “less than a piece of trash” and said she wished he “receive the death penalty.” Margaret’s other sister, Ann Shade, urged the court “to not give him a second chance.”

Sumney would have faced life behind bars if he was sentenced for his initial charges.

His cousin, Margo, explained she will never forget the “metallic smell” when she entered the blood-soaked home in 2019.

“He is the epitome of pure evil,” she said. “We will never find peace with any of this.”

The defense called two Allegheny jail employees to the stand, one of whom described Sumney as a model prisoner who engage in Bible studies with other inmates. Also called to the stand was a doctor who argued that Sumney had diminished mental capacity at the time of the murder because of “extremely high doses” of Adderall.

After the murder, Sumney had reportedly searched online for how to dispose of his mother’s body. Among his searches were, “how long does it take before a body starts to decompose?” and “how long do you wait to dispose of a body?”

The judge sentenced Sumney to a minimum of 20 years in prison and a maximum of 40 years.

“You broke her back,” Ellen told the court. “You paralyzed our mother. And then you just beat her and beat her. The blood was splattered along the walls. But I think the sickest part is the pictures. The 277 pictures. You only take pictures if you want to go back and see what you did.”

Sumney also faces another criminal case in Atlantic City, where his ex-girlfriend accuses him of waterboarding and strangling her in a hotel room in July 2019.

Justin Johnson a former Foster Father from Florida has been sentenced to 170 years in prison for filming at least 18 children in his care. According to court documents Justin Johnson was being investigated by  Child Protective Service who would discover a number of recording devices in the home. When police began to investigate they determined that Justin Johnson had filmed a number of children undressing. Justin Johnson was also seen on film abusing children in his care. Justin Johnson would be arrested and would later plead guilty to  four counts of production of child abuse, one count of production or attempted production of child sexual abuse material, and one count of possession of child sex abuse material. Justin Johnson will serve his prison sentence in the Federal prison system

U.S. District Judge Wendy W. Berger today sentenced Justin Dwayne Johnson, Sr. (48, Sanford) to 170 years in federal prison for four counts of production of child sexual abuse material, one count of production and attempted production of child sexual abuse material, and one count of possession of child sex abuse material. Johnson had pleaded guilty on July 7, 2022.

According to court documents, in January 2022, an investigation was initiated into Johnson after Child Protection Services was alerted that Johnson was secretly recording his foster children. Johnson disclosed to an acquaintance that he had cameras in his home to record the children in the nude and that he had videos of him touching the children. During the investigation, law enforcement officers seized several devices belonging to Johnson. Forensic examinations of Johnson’s cellphone and other electronic devices revealed numerous images and videos of child sex abuse material. Specifically, the evidence showed that Johnson used the children under his care to produce depictions of sexually explicit conduct. Johnson’s cellphone also contained numerous visual depictions of child sex abuse material depicting young children. So far, the FBI has identified at least 18 victims that were sexually exploited by Johnson.

“Protecting children from sexual abuse and exploitation is one of the highest priorities of my office,” said U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg. “This defendant victimized children who were especially vulnerable because they needed the protection of the foster care system. I am proud of the outstanding work by our local and federal law enforcement partners and my office that brought this predator to justice.”

“Instead of offering a haven for foster children, this predator betrayed the children with a home of horrific abuse,” said FBI Tampa Special Agent in Charge David Walker. “The FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force is committed to identifying, locating, and recovering the innocent victims of sexual abuse and ensuring their abusers are brought to justice.

“Johnson’s crimes are particularly disturbing, in that he was in a position that is expected to provide protection and care to already vulnerable children, and he exploited that role and further victimized these young children,” said Chief Cecil Smith of the Sanford Police Department. “I hope his sentence brings some comfort to those who he has abused.”

“As you can imagine, investigations of this nature can present overwhelming challenges,” stated Seminole County Sheriff Dennis M. Lemma. “However, the dedication of our teams, their diligence, and the collaborative efforts of the law enforcement professionals assigned to this case resulted in a successful prosecution and a sentence that sends a strong message that there are severe consequences for those who prey upon and exploit the most precious members of our community.”

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Sanford Police Department and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Courtney Richardson-Jones and Ilianys Rivera Miranda.

This is another case brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims. Nicholas Gutierrez More News

California police officials have released the wrong-way driver accused of plowing his SUV into a group of police recruits and staff earlier this week, citing the “extreme complexity” of the ongoing case.

Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, 22, was released from police custody late Thursday – just hours after officials announced that he had been charged with the attempted murder in connection with Wednesday’s devastating wrong-way wreck.

In a shocking reversal, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said early Friday morning that the agency had released Gutierrez just before 10 p.m. local time Thursday.

“Due to the extreme complexity of the investigation, which includes ongoing interviews, video surveillance review, and additional evidence needed to be analyzed, homicide investigators have released Mr. Gutierrez from the Sheriff’s Department custody,” the agency said in a press release announcing the change.

The charge of attempted murder of a peace officer(s) requires evidence that the crime was intentional rather than that someone was mistaken or distracted or otherwise did not mean to commit the act.

According to local affiliate FOX 11 Los Angeles, Sheriff Alex Villanueva had previously said that investigators had gleaned enough to suspect intent.

“They did a thorough investigation. They interviewed dozens and dozens of witnesses and victims,” Villanueva said, according to the report. “That was the conclusion.”

On Wednesday, Villanueva said that 75 recruits from Sheriff’s Academy Class 464 had been running near the intersection of Mills Avenue and Telegraph Road in Whittier, California, just before 6:30 a.m., when they were struck. The group was running with a pair of police vehicles, and some runners were wearing reflective vests.

The SUV then plowed into a light pole before coming to a stop.

“It happened so quickly that just the people that just saw it veer into them, they jumped out of the way, but the people behind had no chance, because they never saw it,” Villanueva said. “They didn’t have that sufficient warning.”

“There were so many bodies scattered everywhere in different states of injuries,” he said.

Gutierrez allegedly had a blood-alcohol content of zero, and a field sobriety test was negative for obvious impairment. Information regarding any drugs in his system was not immediately available.

Several recruits suffered injuries that varied from broken bones to head trauma and the “loss of limb.” As of Wednesday, five were critically injured.

The California Highway Patrol is also investigating the collision. Those with any information related to the incident should call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.

An Ohio woman allegedly admitted to drowning her elderly grandmother to avoid nursing home bills.

Heidi Matheny, 35, was arrested for the murder of her 93-year-old grandmother, Alice Matheny.

The granddaughter allegedly admitted she took her grandmother to a doctor’s appointment, where a doctor told them the elderly woman needed to be in a nursing home, something they could not afford and insurance would not cover, according to the Eaton, Ohio, police report

Heidi said they left the appointment and enjoyed ice cream together.

Back at the house, Heidi allegedly described to officers how she walked up behind her grandmother while the 93-year-old woman was doing dishes and pushed her head into the sink, holding her there “until the bubbles stopped,” according to the police report cited by WDTN.

The 35-year-old allegedly said she then brought her grandmother to the bathtub to make sure she was dead.

“It’s nothing that she did,” Heidi allegedly said during a police interview. “She’s not – She’s the perfect freaking grandma.”

“According to the confession, she was just tired of taking care of a grandmother,” Eaton Police Division Chief Steven Hurd said. “It’s difficult not to take this to heart when you have a 35-year-old granddaughter who allegedly drowned her grandmother of 93 years of age in the bathtub.”

After the deed was done, Heidi left the apartment through a window and walked to the nearby sheriff’s office.

The Eaton Police Division said officers were dispatched to the 300 block of East Somers Street on a report of a possible homicide at approximately 5:54 p.m. on Tuesday.

Upon arrival, officers found Alice Matheny dead in the bathtub as Heidi had described.

The granddaughter was arrested and booked into Preble County Jail on a murder charge. Though, the police department said formal charges are pending from the Preble County Prosecutor’s Office.

The grandmother was transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.

Police said there are currently no other suspects, though the case remains under investigation.
