26-year-old woman has been arraigned in the fatal stabbing of her manager after being told to leave early from her shift following an argument at a Detroit-area McDonald’s restaurant.
Afeni Badu Muhammad was arraigned Friday on first-degree premeditated murder and carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, the Macomb County prosecutor’s office said in a release.
After being told to leave the Eastpointe restaurant Thursday morning, a masked Muhammad allegedly returned and entered through the employee entrance, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Eastpointe is just northeast of Detroit.
Jennifer Harris, 39, was stabbed multiple times. A customer at the McDonald’s drive-thru window fired a gun in an effort to stop the attack on Harris, followed Muhammad as she fled to a vehicle and held her at gunpoint until police arrived.
The customer was legally allowed to carry a concealed weapon.
“This is an absolutely senseless and heartbreaking tragedy,” Prosecutor Peter Lucido said. “A life was taken in an act of unimaginable violence. The victim leaves behind six children, six young lives that will now grow up without a parent.”
Muhammad, of Eastpointe, was being held in the Macomb County Jail on a $25 million bond. A not guilty plea was entered by a judge at Friday’s arraignment, according to court records.
“There are a lot of things that need to come to light regarding this matter,” Muhammad’s arraignment attorney Matthew Licata told The Associated Press.
Muhammad has a probable cause conference on July 23 and a preliminary examination on July 30.

A 26-year-old Eastpointe woman who allegedly fatally stabbed her boss Tuesday is charged with first degree premeditated murder.
Afeni Badu Muhammad was arraigned in 38th District Court Friday afternoon where Judge Kathleen Galen set the cash/surety bond at $25 million.
First degree murder carries penalties up to life without parole offense. Muhammad is also charged with carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, a five-year felony and is being prosecuted as a habitual offender due to a previous stabbing incident in Virginia.
If bond is posted, Muhammad must wear a steel cuff tether, report daily to community corrections, no drug or alcohol use with testing, no contact with any of the victim’s family, and cannot return to McDonald’s. Muhammad is currently held at the Macomb County Jail.
Galen said she considered Muhammad a flight risk and said that was one of the reasons the bond was set at $25 million.
“The charges here involve a violent crime with a weapon that created substantial risk to the public,” said Galen. “The court finds that there is a significant threat to public safety and therefore, the bond must reflect that risk.”
On July 8 at approximately 8 a.m., Muhammad allegedly entered the McDonald’s restaurant on Nine Mile Road near Schroeder Avenue through the employee entrance with a kitchen knife and stabbed her boss, Jennifer Harris, 39, of Mount Clemens multiple times.
It is alleged Harris sent Muhammad home early from her shift and that Muhammad went to a nearby park, then returned to the restaurant wearing a mask with a knife that she had in her vehicle.
A drive-thru customer, who was also a licensed CPL holder, witnessed the assault and fired his weapon into the air in an attempt to stop it. Muhammad then fled to her vehicle and was apprehended and held at gunpoint by the customer until Eastpointe police officers arrived on the scene.
Harris was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries, according to Eastpointe police.
“The nature of the charges along with prior criminal history suggest that there is substantial evidence against the defendant,” said Galen. “The defendant has a violent criminal past and history supports the court’s concern that the defendant may engage in further violent conduct if she is released.”
Harris was a single mother of six and had worked at the McDonald’s restaurant for 15 years.
“This is an absolutely senseless and heartbreaking tragedy,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido.”The victim leaves behind six children, six young lives that will now grow up without a parent.
“This isn’t just a statistic; this is a family shattered, a future forever altered.”
