aturday evening, Akron police responded to calls of shots fired.

“We just heard a bunch of gunshots, maybe five to 10 minutes ago,” a caller told a 911 dispatcher that night.

Akron Police Lt. Michael Murphy told FOX 8 News that when they arrived at the “chaotic” scene on Wilbeth Road just after 8 p.m., they found a vehicle that had been shot at multiple times crashed into a wooded area.

A 2-year-old baby was pulled out from the car and was not injured, according to police. But 47-year-old Tania Mangual and her 12-year-old son Jericho were both shot.

“Unfortunately, there was a young man that was 12 years old was pronounced deceased on scene,” Murphy said. “His mother was the driver of the vehicle was transported to a hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries as well.”

The suspect, quickly identified as 28-year-old Brandon Casto who lived in the same apartment home where it happened, had fled the scene. Police said he shot at another woman who played dead and waited for him to leave.

“She was able to give us an amazing statement as to how this exactly played out and what happened and, as you can imagine, this is an extremely traumatic incident for her,” Murphy said.

Brandon Casto surrendered to authorities in Meigs County, Ohio, more than two and a half hours from Akron, on the West Virginia border, but not before police said he confessed to friends, one of whom called 911.

“Basically, all I know is he called me after it happened,” a caller told a 911 dispatcher.

“We are still working through it and trying to figure out what the motive is, but we have had some reports that indicate that there was a dispute of some sort,” Murphy said, eluding to the fight potentially starting over parking.

Barberton Schools are making counselors available at the middle school where Jericho was a student, after they returned from spring break Tuesday.

“This is a terrible incident, a terrible tragedy in our community, and we are in the early stages of trying to figure out exactly what happened,” Murphy said.

As Akron police work to determine what led to the deadly weekend shooting that killed 12-year-old Jericho Mangual and his mother, 47-year-old Tania Mangual, reports indicate it may have been due to a dispute over parking.

“We will get down to the bottom of figuring out what the motive behind this was,” Akron Police Lt. Michael Murphy tells 3News. “We’ve received reports that there was some form of a dispute, people have indicated that it was over parking. We’re working through interviews right now to verify that.”

The situation started around 8:10 p.m. Saturday when officers responded to the scene in the 30 block of West Wilbeth Road.

When police arrived, they found a vehicle — which was partially on fire — that had crashed into a tree line on Hemlock Street, just south of West Wilbeth Road.

Police say Jericho was found inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Mangual, who was driving, had also been shot. She was taken to the hospital where she later died.

A 2-year-old boy, also Mangual’s son, was found inside the vehicle. He was not hurt, but was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital as a precaution.

“Dispatch received multiple 911 calls, including one from a 49-year-old woman who fled the scene after being shot at by the suspect,” according to a press release from Akron police. “Later, she provided detectives with information that helped identify the suspect as 28-year-old Brandon T. Casto.”

Brandon Casto later turned himself in at the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office in southern Ohio near the West Virginia border. He was taken to the Southeast Regional Jail in Nelsonville on two counts of aggravated murder and two counts of felonious assault.

Akron Police Major Crimes Unit detectives are still examining the circumstances surrounding this incident and the investigation remains ongoing. Anybody with information is asked to call the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490 or 330-375-2Tip.
