More than a year ago, the Logan Daily News published an update on the death of a 10-month-old Logan girl who had died after suffering multiple serious head injuries, apparently while at home. At that time, the paper reported that though Ka’myla Somers’ death had occurred in November 2022, nearly two years earlier, no criminal charges were pending in connection with it.
That has finally changed. On Friday Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, whose Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been looking into the case, announced that the girl’s mother, 27-year-old Daisha Somers, has been indicted for murder and other alleged offenses.
According to a news release from the AG’s office, Somers was arrested on a 10-count felony indictment that was handed down by a Hocking County grand jury on Wednesday. She was taken into custody near Point Pleasant, West Virginia, by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office and West Virginia State Police. She is being held in the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville
Somers is charged with:
• Two counts of murder, an unclassified felony
• One count of involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony
• One count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony
One count of corrupting another with drugs, a second-degree felony
• Four counts of endangering children, second-, third- and fourth-degree felonies
• One count of aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony
As reported by the Logan Daily News in its October 2024 update on the case, initially Somers and her boyfriend were each charged with child endangerment. At the request of the Hocking County Prosecutor’s Office, however, those charges were later dismissed for possible indictment by a county grand jury.
In December 2022, at the request of the Hocking County Prosecutor’s office, Hocking County Common Pleas Judge Jason Despetorich appointed a special prosecutor to help with the case, bringing the AG’s office into it.
The Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Section is handling prosecution of the case.
