An affidavit obtained by 11 News reveals disturbing new details about what led up to a Halloween triple stabbing that left one person dead and two others with life-threatening injuries.
Colorado Springs police said they arrested Matthew Regnier for first-degree murder, attempted murder, assault, and child abuse for stabbing three people in a domestic violence incident in the 1400 block of El Paso Street just before midnight on Friday.
One man died at a local hospital while two women were treated for life-threatening injuries.
Those who live in the area said they are still shaken up. Susan Reynolds said nothing like this has ever happened before in all her almost 50 years in the neighborhood.
“I have literally cried every day,” she said. “It is just so shocking, it’s hard to even fathom that this could take place.”
Reynolds said she isn’t the only one who feels the weight.
“Everyone is just really devastated,” she said. “I mean, just wow, how could this happen in our neighborhood, in this quiet little neighborhood?”
Reynolds said she would like to know if there is anything she can do to help those affected, though she is already doing what she can.
We can pray, we can pray for the families, we can pray for the people,” she said. “I just pray that nothing like this ever happens again.”

According to the arrest affidavit, Colorado Springs Police got multiple calls for a domestic disturbance just before midnight on Friday. When police got on scene, they found three people with stab wounds, one man and two women. They also found Matthew Regnier, “fully naked and bloodied”, and holding a two-year-old child.
All parties were taken to local hospitals. The man, who documents identified as the child’s uncle, died just before 1:00 a.m. on Saturday at Penrose Hospital on Nevada. The child was not physically harmed.
The affidavit shows this was not the first call for service involving the same parties. On September 26, records show officers responded to a domestic disturbance where a woman told officers Regnier had left the house after an altercation. She said “that she had recently told Matthew [Regnier] that she intended to file for [redacted] and that she intended to get [redacted] of [redacted].”
Just after 10:00 a.m., detectives said they were able to get a short statement from one of the female victims. She said, “Regnier was keeping her from the [redacted]. [redacted] stated that she and [redacted] were trying to get [redacted] from Matthew when he got a knife and began to stab them. [redacted] stated her screaming prompted [redacted] to enter the bedroom to assist. [redacted] stated that Matthew began to stab all three people.”
In an interview with police at the Police Operations Center, Regnier described what happened as a “three-on-one assault,” so he “…grabbed a buck knife and defended himself.” Regnier also said he had a video of the incident on his phone, which showed him appearing to stab the victims. When police viewed the video with Regnier, he claimed it corroborated his story of self-defense because he was in fear for his life. However, when police asked why [redacted] would want to kill him, he said he didn’t know. He then ended the interview, asking for legal counsel.
