A Durham woman was identified as the suspect in an incident Thursday afternoon that left one of her children dead and another hospitalized, police said.
Radio dispatch audio obtained by CBS 17 details the moments after first responders received a cardiac arrest call around 5:30 p.m. on Chartwell Court near N.C. 98 in southeast Durham. The audio indicates both victims were under five years old.
According to the Durham Police Department, officers found two unresponsive children at the scene. Both were transported to a local hospital, where one was pronounced dead.
Police said the incident is considered a homicide and investigated the area for more than 12 hours that night. The following morning, glass remained scattered on a driveway where a vehicle appeared to have been towed away.
On Friday, police said they arrested 41-year-old Andrea Morgan Faust of Durham in connection with the incident. She is charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder
Faust is the mother of the two children, according to Durham police.
Dispatch audio indicates Faust ran from officers when they arrived at the scene with their K-9 unit.
According to court records, Faust was not given bond. She is scheduled to make her first appearance in Durham County Court late Monday morning.
No further details have been provided by Durham police as of Friday. The incident remains under investigation.
