A 20-year-old college student in Florida has been charged after allegedly giving birth at home on a toilet and letting her newborn baby die before performing in a local theater show the same day.

Anne Mae Demegillo of Palm Coast in Flagler County was arrested on Friday, March 6, and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, according to public arrest records from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO).

In a press conference held on the day of the arrest, shared by Fox 35 Orlando, FCSO Chief Deputy Joe Barile stated that the Flagler County Emergency Communication Center received a call at around 4 a.m. local time on Friday from an individual requesting a welfare check on an adult female.

The caller informed operators that 20-year-old Anne Mae Demegillo had sent messages to the caller saying that she had secretly been pregnant and unexpectedly gave birth at home,” Barile said.

Officers arrived at Demegillo’s home later that morning, at which point Demegillo allegedly confirmed to officers that she had delivered a baby in the toilet the day before. She allegedly told officers that the newborn cried initially, but eventually stopped moving.

“At that point, she hid the infant in a duffel bag in her closet and went about with her normal daily routine,” Barile said during the press conference.

Barile stated that Demegillo proceeded to go to her local college and “did a performance at a theater” before returning home.

Demegillo told officers that she buried the deceased baby in a shallow grave in the backyard at approximately 10 p.m. that evening, per Barile.

Demegillo — who allegedly told investigators that she had not been certain she was pregnant until she gave birth — led officers to where the infant was buried.

Barile said that the deceased baby weighed 3 lbs., 6 ounces.

Barile said the investigation is still ongoing and urged anyone with information regarding the case to come forward.

He also reminded the public that under Florida’s Safe Haven Law, parents who cannot care for a newborn can safely surrender the child to any fire station, hospital or police station, free of consequences.

The FCSO did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Fla. College Student, 20, Gave Birth on Toilet and Allegedly Let Newborn Baby Die

A newborn was found dead in a shallow grave on Friday morning after deputies say a 20-year-old woman delivered the baby at home alive, then watched the baby die.

Anne Mae Demegillo then allegedly put the baby in a duffel bag in her closet to attend a theater performance at her college, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said at a news conference on Friday.

Another person called 911 and said the woman had told them she was secretly pregnant, gave birth, and did something to the baby.

Deputies went to the home near the intersection of Florida Park Drive and Forest Hill Drive for a welfare check early Friday morning, where they found the woman and located the baby.

Chief Deputy Joe Barile of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said, “It baffles me, to be completely honest. Sometimes you can’t explain everything.”

Upon arrival, deputies say Demegillo led them to a shallow grave in the backyard. Investigators revealed that she gave birth sometime Thursday and watched her child die. The baby was a girl, weighing 3 pounds, six ounces, and measuring 18 inches long.

Barile explained, “She goes to the bathroom, she thought she had cramps, pains, and then a child, she goes into labor, and then delivers a child. She sees it in the toilet, leaves it there, watches it, hears it cry, and waits until it stops crying and moving.”

He added, “She hid the infant in a duffel bag in her closet and went about her normal routine. She went to her college. And he says she came here, to the Little Theatre in New Smyrna Beach, for a performance. She played the character Virtue in the musical, ‘Anything Goes.'”

Detectives say Demegillo returned home around 10 p.m. Thursday night and buried the child, wrapped in a towel, in a shallow grave out back. Barile noted, “As far as the grave, deputies only had to remove, I’d say four to five inches of dirt to find the baby.”

Deputies say the baby was under 4 pounds and appears to have died from abandonment.

Anne Mae Demegillo is being detained and facing aggravated manslaughter charges. She told deputies she didn’t know she was pregnant until she went to the bathroom and gave birth.

The woman’s mom was home at the time, deputies said. Demegillo showed no sadness or remorse.

Demegillo appeared before a Flagler County judge on Saturday morning and was denied bond.
