A Barry County teen who police say fatally shot a 17-year-old with a crossbow and then buried his body in a shallow grave has now pleaded guilty to open murder.

18-year-old Patrick Gilmore is set to be sentenced on Wednesday, May 25 for the September 2021 homicide of 17-year-old Lane Roslund.

Authorities say Gilmore was 17 years old at the time he committed the crime and was charged as an adult with open murder and concealment of a body.

A probable cause document filed in Barry County Circuit Court states that Gilmore told detectives he shot Roslund once in the chest with a crossbow on September 10, or September 11 in 2021.

Gilmore lead Michigan State Police to Roslund’s body which was buried behind his grandfather’s Hastings Township home on October 13, 2021.

The Barry County Prosecutor Julie Nakfoor Pratt said her office is pursuing a life sentence without the possibility of parole, but that because Gilmore was younger than 18 at the time of the crime, his defense team could argue for a lesser term.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that juveniles may not receive mandatory sentences of life without parole.

Patrick Gilmore Pleads Guilty

Patrick Gilmore Other News

A Barry County teen pleaded guilty to killing another teenage boy in September 2021 with a crossbow before he admitted to burying his body in a shallow grave, according to court records.

The accused killer, 18-year-old Patrick Gilmore, admitted to police he tried to cover up the Sept. 2021 homicide of 17-year-old Lane Roslund, according to a probable cause document filed in Barry County Circuit Court.

Gilmore pleaded guilty to open murder in Barry County Circuit Court last Wednesday and will be sentenced May 25. Gilmore was 17 years old at the time of the killing and was charged as an adult with open murder and concealment of a body.

As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped a charge of concealment of a body.

Investigators found Roslund’s remains in a shallow grave on Gilmore’s property on the 1600 block of M-43 in Hastings Township Oct. 13, 2021. According to investigators, Gilmore shot Roslund once in the chest with a crossbow on Sept 10, 2021 or Sept 11, 2021.

Gilmore told detectives he intentionally placed a sweatshirt, cell phone and bicycle belonging to Roslund in Hastings near the Thornapple River in an attempt to deceive investigators to follow an initial theory the teen drowned.

Detectives said Gilmore also wanted to direct attention away from his residence, located about two miles from Tyden Park, where Roslund was last seen alive.

Roslund had been missing for about a month after he was last seen in a downtown Hastings park, court records show.

Detectives said Gilmore lead Michigan State Police to Roslund’s decomposed body.

Detectives said they began to question Gilmore a month later after Roslund went missing when witnesses said Roslund was potentially headed to Gilmore’s house.

Hastings Police said Gilmore initially denied any involvement during questioning but later admitted he shot Roslund and buried him in a hole he dug on his grandfather’s property.

Investigators found two crossbows hanging in Gilmore’s basement. Detectives said one crossbow bolt without an attached broadhead was located in the woods near the burial site.

Steven Ray Hessler Sentenced To 650 Years In Prison

Steven Ray Hessler

Steven Ray Hessler was just sentenced to 650 years in prison for a series of sexual assaults in the 1980’s. According to court documents from Aug. 14, 1982, and Aug. 17, 1985 where he terrorized a number of teenage girls and women in Indiana. The attacks suddenly stopped as Steven Ray Hessler was arrested for sexual assault in another county and sentenced to twenty years in prison. Now Steven Ray Hessler who was convicted last month of two counts of rape, six counts of unlawful deviate conduct, seven counts of burglary resulting in bodily injury, three counts of criminal deviate conduct and one count of robbery will never have the opportunity to victimize another woman or teenage girl again.

Steven Ray Hessler More News

Forty years after a masked man terrorized Shelby County, Ind., breaking into multiple homes and attacking and raping women, Steven Ray Hessler has been sentenced for his string of assaults.

Hessler, 59, has been sentenced to 650 years in prison after being convicted last month of two counts of rape, six counts of unlawful deviate conduct, seven counts of burglary resulting in bodily injury, three counts of criminal deviate conduct and one count of robbery, according to Shelby County Prosecutor Brad Landwerlen

Between Aug. 14, 1982, and Aug. 17, 1985, Hessler “attacking, raping, binding, threatening and sexually torturing women,” Landwerlen said.

The victims included a 16-year-old child and a man who he hit repeatedly over the head with a gun, leaving him in a coma for months.

The attacks stopped in the late ‘80s, which lines up with Hessler’s conviction and 20-year sentence for a rape in another county, according to officials.

Despite great care to clean the crime scenes, Hessler left a spot of DNA, which was a partial match to as many as 100 suspects, including Hessler’s cousin and Michael Kenyan, known as the Illinois Enema Bandit, who was convicted in a similar string of attacks in the late 1970s and released before the assaults in Shelby County began; Kenyan inspired the Frank Zappa song “Illinois Enema Bandit.”

Eventually, in 2020, the DNA was run through the same testing used to identify the Golden State Killer and came back with one match: Hessler.

During a search of Hessler’s home, investigators found photographs stolen from one local victim, 30 pairs of women’s underwear, each individually bagged, handcuffs and coats with ski masks in the pockets. His computer also shows research on multiple victims.

The DNA at the scene matched the DNA on an envelope Hessler had licked to send in his water bill.

“Steven Ray Hessler is one of the most evil, dangerous, sadistic predators that I’ve had the pleasure of prosecuting in my 30+ year career,” Landwerlen said in a statement.

“He derived great pleasure from his unnecessarily brutal methods of terrorizing and sexually torturing his victims. I promised the victims early-on that my goal would be that he go to prison the rest of his life, and all involved are very happy that we have achieved that goal.”

Steven Ray Hessler Other News

A man convicted in a string of home break-ins and rape cases around Shelby County in the eighties will likely never be free again.

A judge sentenced Steven Ray Hessler to 650 years in prison for his 19 convictions. The sentence includes 50 years for each count, with six of the sentences being served concurrently

During Friday’s emotional sentencing hearing, eight victims testified along with the sister of one victim.

“The victims suffered for so long and they wondered constantly if someone looked at them in the store, if a car drove by slow, if a car drove by and honked, anything out of the norm ‘is this him? is he coming to get me,’” Shelby County Prosecutor Brad Landwerlen said.

In court, the judge described Hessler’s crimes as “monstrous” and “horrific.”

Prosecutor Landwerlen dubbed Steven Ray Hessler the “Coward Sadist”

“He’s a sadist because he loves getting pleasure from hurting other people,” Landwerlen said. “He’s a coward because he would only do it when he was armed.”

The crimes haunted the Shelby County area for decades. Hessler, investigators said, was responsible for a series of home invasions and sexual assaults committed in Shelbyville and other parts of Shelby County between 1982 and 1985.

For years, residents lived in fear because of the nighttime attacks. Victims were awakened in the middle of the night by a man with a ski mask or leggings concealing his face. He would then force them at gunpoint or knifepoint to perform sex acts and steal money and valuables.

“Steven Ray Hessler is one of the most evil, cruel, sadistic predators that I’ve had the pleasure of prosecuting over 30 years,” Landwerlen said.

There were also accounts that the man threatened to hurt or kill children if his victims didn’t comply.

The attacks stopped in the late 1980s, but the case remained unsolved for decades. DNA evidence linked Hessler to the crimes. Investigators realized the attacks had stopped because he’d been convicted of rape in Decatur County in the late 1980s and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

While Steven Ray Hessler had been careful to cover his tracks during his attacks—wiping down the scenes and taking any items he may have touched—he slipped up and left bodily fluid at the scene of one of the assaults.

He was matched to his 1980s DNA after investigators collected a sample from an envelope Hessler had licked and sent in with a utility payment.

Other evidence linked him to the crimes, including pictures stolen from one of the victims that were found in his possession. Police found evidence on his computer that he’d searched for some of his victims.

A jury convicted Hessler in March following an eight-day trial. The charges included two counts of rape, six counts of unlawful deviate conduct, seven counts of burglary resulting in bodily injury, three counts of criminal deviate conduct and one count of robbery.

“[Hessler] is where he needs to be and he needs to stay in jail until it’s time to put him in the ground,” Prosecutor Landwerlen said.

The judge appointed Hessler a public defender in case he choses to pursue any appeals.

Hessler will remain in the Shelby County Jail until he’s transferred to state prison.

The ex-boyfriend of missing Navarre woman Cassie Carli has been arrested in Tennessee on multiple charges related to the case.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office announced just before 5 p.m. Saturday that Marcus Spanevelo is in custody. The Maury County Sheriff’s Office in Tennessee tells Channel 3 he was booked into jail Friday night around 11 p.m.

Spanevelo was arrested by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations and the Tennessee Highway Patrol in Maury County, according to the TBI. He is being held on the following charges:

  • Tampering with Evidence
  • Giving False Information Concerning a Missing Persons Investigation
  • Destruction of Evidence

Spanevelo was arrested based on a Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes warrant which was signed by a Judge,” the sheriff’s office says in a Facebook post.

The case remains an active investigation.

“We are cautious as to the information being released due to the sensitivity of this case. Search efforts for Cassi Carli remain underway. The mutual child is still safe,” the post states.

Carli, 37, was officially reported missing and endangered by the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday after last being seen on Sunday.

Carli disappeared after a scheduled custody exchange of her and Spanevelo’s 4-year-old daughter, Saylor, in the parking lot of Juana’s Pagodas restaurant at Navarre Beach. Deputies found Carli’s vehicle nearby on Tuesday with some of her personal belongings inside.

Santa Rosa County investigators interviewed Spanevelo on Wednesday after locating him and Saylor in Birmingham, Alabama. The investigators then returned to Santa Rosa County.

Sheriff Bob Johnson said in a press conference on Thursday that they were “intent” on speaking with Spanevelo again since he was the last known person to see Carli.

Carli’s father texted Carli Sunday night asking about her whereabouts. A few hours later, he received a text message from her phone stating she was having car and phone troubles. She added she was staying at Spanevelo’s home for the night.

More text messages show Spanevelo told Carli’s father around 5:30 p.m. Monday that she asked him to drop her off “in the middle of nowhere in Destin” so she could go to her friend’s home. That friend later told Channel 3 that Carli never arrived at her home. Spanevelo added he left with Saylor and that Carli’s car was in Navarre.

Friends, family and citizens have been conducting organized searches for Carli in the Navarre Beach area since Monday. Local businesses as well as Escambia Search and Rescue have joined in. The latest search took place on Saturday.

Carli’s whereabouts are still unknown. A $3,000 reward is available for any tip into Santa Rosa County Crime Stoppers that leads to closure in the case. Call 850-437-STOP.

Oliver Hitchcock Other News

An 8-year-old boy has died two days after being found unresponsive in a Sheboygan Falls apartment, police confirmed during a Saturday morning news conference.

His mother is in custody and is the only suspect in this case, according to police.

The Sheboygan Falls Police Chief identified the boy as Oliver Hitchcock.

Police said he passed away Friday afternoon.

An autopsy is scheduled next week.

Officers were called to the Plank Trail Apartments in Sheboygan Falls on Wednesday evening.

“The initial response I can say was due to a strangulation,” said Police Chief Eric Miller on Saturday.

Police said the boy’s mother was also taken to a hospital with what they say were “self-inflicted injuries.” She was released on Friday and transported to the Sheboygan County Jail.

WISN 12 News spoke with Oliver’s uncle on his Dad’s side Saturday.

“Oliver was a sweet, smart kid,” said Eric Hitchcock. “He played Minecraft quite a bit and he was into airplanes.”

He also said he enjoyed spending time with his brother.

“It’s horrible that it happened. It just doesn’t make any sense,” Hitchcock said. “I just couldn’t believe it was true. I mean I just talked to his mom two days before and things were normal and we had a good conversation. It’s just unbelievable.”

Hitchcock set up a Gofundme to help support Oliver’s Dad, Jeff.

Jeff is a truck driver and will need to take time off to care for his other son on his own.

“It’s just horrible and it’s hard to get through it,” Eric Hitchcock said. “He’s [Oliver’s dad] just existing trying to get through it.”

You can donate to the family’s GoFundMe by clicking here.

Chief Miller said they will refer charges of 1st Degree Intentional Homicide and Attempted Homicide to the District Attorney’s office.

“The second count is something that came up in the investigative process,” said Miller. “The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department is the lead agency on that.”

12 News reached out to the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department for more information on the attempted homicide charge. They have not responded as of Saturday night.

Police said they will not release the name of the mother until she is formally charged. A criminal complaint will likely be available early next week once she is formally charged.

Oliver was a student at the Sheboygan Falls Elementary School.

“We have some tough days ahead for our families, our students, our staff. Our crisis team is mobilized and will be on site Monday and throughout the week,” said Superintendent Annalee Bennin.

They are asking families to have conversations with their children ahead of Monday to ensure their mental health.

“Age appropriate conversations are really important, so our crisis team has actually been together this morning and they’re still gathering right now to out together the messaging and what that will look like at every grade level, and specific to classrooms that were more closely affected,” Bennin said. “But it will look different for a 12th grader than it does for a 2ndgrader or kindergartener.”

Dallas Ly Charged In Mothers Murder

Dallas Ly

Dallas Ly is a twenty year old man from Toronto Ontario Canada who has just been charged with his mother, Tien Ly, murder. According to police sources the body of Tien Ly was found in a garbage bag earlier this week. The garbage bag was seen brought to the scene by a collapsible shopping cart by an unidentified man believed to be Dallas Ly. The body of Tien Ly had been dismembered and the woman was identified by her unique nail designs. Dallas Ly has been arrested and charged with Tien Ly murder.

Dallas Ly More News

Toronto police have identified a woman found dead in a black garbage bag in Leslieville this week.

Police said on Wednesday the body found near Eastern and Berkshire avenues on Monday was that of Tien Ly, 46, of Toronto. The body was left near a sidewalk on the south side of Eastern Avenue, west of Leslie Street.

The person who discovered the bag called 911 at about 1:30 p.m. Police believe someone used a collapsible shopping cart to move the body, which they say showed obvious signs of trauma and dismemberment. The case is considered a homicide.

Police also said they cannot locate Ly’s son, Dallas Ly, 20, and are concerned for his well-being. They said he is not a suspect.

Police believe he lived with his mother in a condo building near Carlaw Avenue and Dundas Avenue East, according to Const. Alex Li, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service.

“Officers are concerned because of what they found at the residence,” Li said.

Li said he has a message for Dallas Ly: “Please contact Toronto police immediately. We want to speak with you… It is very unfortunate that this incident has occurred, but … you are an important part of this case. And we need to find you.”

On Tuesday, police released images of Tien Ly’s fingernails and toenails, which were painted with a unique pattern, and images of the long-sleeved, red Armani Exchange shirt she was wearing.

Investigators released them hoping the public could help police to identify her. Li said police appreciated the support they received.

“In this case, we were successful in confirming the identity,” he said.

Ly is Toronto’s 17th homicide victim of the year.

On Tuesday, police also urged anyone who saw a person pushing a foldable shopping cart filled with black garbage bags between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Monday to come forward. And they want anyone who was driving eastbound or westbound on Eastern Avenue at that time and who has dashboard camera video to contact them.
