An Albuquerque teen made his first court appearance for shooting and killing his Uber driver early Thursday morning.

Albuquerque police arrested 18-year-old Sheliky Sanchez overnight Friday after he allegedly shot Joseph Andrus multiple times and killed him. Court documents say Sanchez admitted to killing Andrus, saying it was in part to “let off some steam

Police say Sanchez asked his girlfriend to order an Uber ride because he was stressed and needed to let off some steam. Sanchez added he could not take it out on certain people, so he wanted to take it out on anybody he could find.

Sanchez looked through the Uber drivers and picked out the driver he wanted, later identified as Andrus. He told police that during the drive, he and Andrus had a long conversation and told the detective, Andrus “was actually really cool”. Once the two go to the drop off location, a home on Merlida in Southwest Albuquerque, police say Sanchez ordered Andrus to get out of his car, before shooting him multiple times. Andrus died at the scene.

Sanchez told detectives he “felt bad for him a little bit, but just getting that satisfaction out, out of the way. It’s like a relief. Like taking an in and out breath.”

Sanchez then stole the car, which was later found at his girlfriend’s house in Southwest Albuquerque.

Detectives asked Sanchez if he ordered the Uber ride to steal the car or shoot the driver, and he said “to shoot him”. When police followed up and asked why he picked Andrus, he said in part, “he seemed like a good guy,” adding, “I don’t go for good people.”

KOB4 reached out to Uber for a comment. They sent us the following statement:

“We are shocked and heartbroken for Joseph’s family and loved ones after this senseless attack. We’ve been in contact with the police and are grateful for their work to bring those responsible to justice.” Andrew Hasbun, the head of safety communications.

Sanchez is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder.

At his first court appearance Saturday morning in Metro Court, prosecutors told the judge they were filing a Motion for Pretrial Detention to keep Sanchez in jail ahead of any trial.

A District Court Judge will hear that motion next week.
