Aspen Jeter More News

After weeks of searching, the father of a once-missing child is in custody and that child has been found safe.

But as the quest to find 5-year-old Aspen Jeter finally comes to a positive end, the investigation into the death of her mother – allegedly at the hands of her father – is just beginning to unfold

Both Aspen and her father Antar Antonio Jeter were found on Friday in Danville, Virginia – 230 miles north of where the investigation began in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Antonio was arrested and already faces two charges out of South Carolina: murder and grand larceny.

According to arrest warrants provided by the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office, the first charge is in response to the death of Crystal Jumper who was found dead on Thanksgiving Day during a welfare check by deputies at a home on Louise Drive.

The warrant now suggests that Jumper, Aspen’s mother, had been dead since Nov. 1 after being shot. Investigators have since found enough evidence to charge Antar with murder for allegedly killing Jumper with malice and forethought. The warrant goes on to say that evidence at Jeter’s West Columbia home also linked him to the shooting.

The warrant for grand larceny at a value between $2,000 and $10,000 suggests that, immediately after the shooting, Jeter took the victim’s 2015 Mazda 6 and left the area.

It also points out that the vehicle was spotted in Fayetteville, North Carolina where Jeter was allegedly asking for gas money and panhandling.

The warrants provide more detail about the crimes Jeter is accused of committing, however, authorities have not said what motive he had for the murder or why he took his daughter, Aspen Jeter, from the scene and drove two states away with her.

The father is facing a charge in North Carolina of being a fugitive of justice. The process is already underway to get Aspen back home to South Carolina and in the custody of family members.

However, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office, the return of Antar could take weeks unless he waives his right to an extradition hearing.

It’s unclear if he will face additional charges as the investigation continues.

A journalist is facing kidnapping and other charges after authorities said she dragged her 88-year-old mother from her Miami-Dade home and had her involuntarily placed in an assisted living facility then financially exploited the elderly woman out of more than $200,000.

Catherine Areu Jones, 51, has been arrested on charges including exploitation of the elderly, organized scheme to defraud, conspiracy to commit organized scheme to defraud, kidnapping, false imprisonment and fraudulent use of personal identification, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

Areu Jones is a journalist who has worked under the name Cathy Areu, and formerly worked as a columnist for the Washington Post and as a guest on Fox News, appearing with Tucker Carlson as the “Liberal Sherpa.”

Prosecutors said Areu Jones has been sought by the State Attorney’s Office Elder Exploitation Task Force and the Miami-Dade Police Department since an arrest warrant was issued for her in June, but she allegedly relocated several times, including to Mexico, to avoid arrest.

Areu Jones was booked into the Miami-Dade jail early Friday and remained held without bond. Attorney information wasn’t available.

The investigation into Areu Jones began in 2019, after the Department of Children and Families received reports that she was exploiting her elderly mother, prosecutors said

The claims included an allegation that a quitclaim deed had been used to turn the title of the victim’s home over entirely to Areu Jones. The victim denied ever signing the document, officials said.

Areu Jones allegedly made complaints to DCF that various individuals were neglecting or exploiting the victim, whom she allegedly said had organic brain damage or dementia, rendering the victim unable to adequately care for herself, prosecutors said.

Authorities said Areu Jones allegedly used a revoked power of attorney to twice involuntarily place her mother in assisted living and memory care facilities so she could to gain control over her mother’s financial assets.

The first time, Cathy Areu Jones tricked her mother into believing that she was going on an ice cream outing with her granddaughters, but the elderly woman ended up locked into an assisted living facility instead, prosecutors said.

The mother was able to call someone she knew for help before Areu Jones instructed the facility to stop her from using the phone or receiving visitors, prosecutors said.

In the second incident, Cathy Areu Jones and another person allegedly dragged the elderly woman from her home and took her to another facility, authorities said.

Neighbors who saw the victim’s shoe in her driveway and the front door of the victim’s home left open contacted the police.

In both incidents, investigations and interventions by DCF adult protections investigators and medical doctors led to the victim’s release from the facilities.

When detectives reviewed the victim’s financial affairs, they showed a total loss of over $224,000, including the missing disbursement of the proceeds of a reverse mortgage on the victim’s home that had been voluntarily undertaken by the victim but which all appeared to go into accounts controlled by Areu Jones, prosecutors said.

Detectives also discovered credit cards had been allegedly opened in the victim’s name and utilized by Cathy Areu Jones, and the victim’s bank accounts also noted numerous withdrawals which were allegedly utilized by Areu Jones, officials said.

“Every incident of alleged elder exploitation or abuse touches our heart and never fails to shock us. It seems particularly harder to understand when the alleged perpetrator of the exploitation is a daughter, or a son or another blood relative,” State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a statement. “Too often, these abuses occur behind closed doors, out of the public’s eye. We, here in MiamiDade County, utilizing all the resources of my State Attorney’s Office Elder Exploitation Task Force and the Miami-Dade Police Department, will not allow these transgressions to go unnoticed and unpunished. Not in our community.”

Miami-Dade Police said the investigation is ongoing.

“It is heartbreaking to see one of our most vulnerable victims abused physically, psychologically or financially. Our elderly community paves the path of the future, to ensure we can enjoy our present,” Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo Ramirez said in a statement. “It is our responsibility as a community to show appreciation for their dedicated efforts of ensuring that we have what we have today. We must continue to work together, as the elderly community depends on us to protect them.”

Landlord Michael Dudley Convicted In Suitcase Murders

Michael Dudley

Landlord Michael Dudley decided the best way to get rid of two of his tenets was to murder them, dismember their bodies and stuff them into suitcases before throwing them into a lake. According to court documents Michael Dudley would fatally shoot two of his tenets, Jessica Lewis and boyfriend Austin Wenne, in 2020. After the young couple were fatally shot Michael Dudley would dismember the bodies in order to make the remains fit inside of two suitcases before throwing the luggage into a lake which would later wash up on shore.

Michael Dudley would be arrested and his cell phone data showed that he was at the same beach the day before the young couple washed up. Throw in a neighbour who heard gunshots on the night of the double murder and it was enough to convict Dudley of the double murder

A landlord accused of killing two tenants in 2020 was found guilty of four counts of second-degree murder on Thursday.

Michael Dudley, 62, killed Jessica Lewis, 35, and Austin Wenner, 27. The remains of Lewis and Wenner were found in bags on Alki on June 19, 2020.

Court documents allege Dudley dismembered Lewis and Wenner after killing them, separated their bodies into multiple bags and tried to hide them in different bodies of water.

“This process would have taken a lot of time and effort and his willingness to take these extreme steps demonstrates the threat he poses to the community,” charging documents read.

This was done “likely with the aid of others,” according to charging documents. Dr. Kathy Taylor, Washington state forensic anthropologist, told Seattle police she believed there were possibly multiple people involved, because the cuts on Lewis and Wenner’s bodies were “disorganized” and done in different manners with different apparatuses.

Lewis and Wenner were renting a room in Dudley’s Burien home, and court documents indicate they got into a dispute over rent money.

Investigators said that 10 days before the bodies were discovered in West Seattle, neighbors heard yelling and gunshots at Dudley’s home, but Dudley did not answer the door when Burien police responded.

After the guilty conviction, the mother of Wenner said she felt justice was served and that people in Seattle are now better protected.

“The world is a safer place without Michael Dudley in it,” Charleen Kriens said. “Everybody can rest easy tonight because of that.”

Kriens added that this conviction will allow the families to find healing and that the memories of Austin and Jessica will not be forgotten.

“My son is shining down from up above and saying, ‘You got it mom,'” said Kriens.

Michael Dudley Other News

Washington state jury on Thursday found a landlord guilty of killing two tenants and stuffing their dead bodies into suitcases.

The jury decision comes after Michael Dudley, 64, killed both Jessica Lewis and boyfriend Austin Wenne. The couple’s bodies washed ashore inside suitcases on Alki Beach in Seattle in 2020, according to FOX 13.

A neighbor reported gunshots in Burien, Washington on June 9, 2020 as well as a man pleading for his life, but officers didn’t find anyone in the home. When asked by police, Dudley couldn’t explain why he wouldn’t answer the door for police.

Using cell phone data, officials learned that Lewis stopped sending texts on the night of the alleged shooting. Also using cell phone data, the landlord, Dudley, was found to have been near Alki Beach just one day before officials discovered the suitcase with the bodies inside.

Prosecutors didn’t have eyewitnesses to directly link the landlord to the murders, but relied on evidence that they argued proved Dudley’s guilt, and pointed toward the neighbor.

Lewis and Wenne were both Dudley’s tenants

Prosecutors said that Wenne was shot at least one time and Lewis was shot at least twice before the couple was mutilated and put into suitcases.

Lawyers for the landlord argued that the 62-year-old wasn’t capable of pulling the crime off.

Lewis’ aunt, Gina Jaschke, said that she has trouble looking at Dudley.

“I’m just hopeful his reign of terror comes to an end,” said Jaschke. “I just look at him and I can’t imagine what he’s done to them. It’s hard, really hard.”

Michael Burke and Samantha Perry Charged In Freezer Murder

Michael Burke and Samantha Perry

Michael Burke and Samantha Perry are a couple who are from Lowell Massachusetts who have been charged in the missing person case of John Wayne Potter who was found dead in a freezer with his hands and feet bound with duct tape. According to police reports John Wayne Potter went missing and a week later his body was discovered in a basement freezer of the home he shared with Michael Burke and Samantha Perry. Michael Burke and Samantha Perry More News

A man and woman from Massachusetts accused of restraining and holding a man against his will after he was found dead inside their Lowell home appeared in court Monday.

Michael Burke and Samantha Perry, both 38 years old, were arraigned on kidnapping charges after a 37-year-old Lowell man was found dead during a well-being check at the pair’s residence on Coburn Street on Friday

Burke and Perry pleaded not guilty and were held pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Dec. 14.

Although court paperwork does not identify the victim, it said the man — who struggled with opioid addiction — was reported missing by family because he had not been seen since before Thanksgiving and did not show up for dinner on the holiday.

The Middlesex District Attorney’s office said evidence found in the home indicated the man had been restrained inside the residence.

According to court documents, Perry and Burke — who are in a relationship — told investigators that on Nov. 23, they attacked the victim — with whom they lived — before binding him to a chair and duct-taping his mouth.

“(Perry and Burke) forced (the victim) into a wooden chair and then bound him, binding his arms, body and mouth with wire, a green rope, an orange tie down strap and gray duct tape,” a court document stated.

Perry and Burke told police a third person used the rope to strangle the victim, according to court documents.

“(The other person) attacked the bound (victim), wrapped the green rope around (his) neck and strangled him until he was apparently deceased,” Perry told investigators, according to court documents.

Perry and Burke then moved the victim’s body into a freezer in the basement, where it was found by police.

Perry and Burke told police they were forced to partake in the criminal activity by the third person, who was pointing a handgun at them, according to court documents.

“It’s the very beginning of what looks like a very complex situation that arose here in Lowell,” Stanley Norkunas, Burke’s defense attorney, told reporters outside the courthouse. “I don’t know much more than all of you would know at this point in time. We’re collecting a number of facts on that.”

Investigators believe the death is an isolated incident.

The Chief Medical Examiner will positively identify the man and determine the cause and manner of his death.

On Thursday, the Lowell Police Department issued a missing person alert for 36-year-old John Wayne Potter. Police have not said if this missing person case is connected to the body found in the Coburn Street home on Friday.
