Loran Cole Execution Scheduled

A Florida man convicted of killing a college freshman and raping the student’s sister while the siblings camped in a national forest 30 years ago is scheduled to be executed Thursday.

Unless the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes, Loran Cole is set to be put to death just after 6 p.m. at Florida State Prison for the 1994 killing. Cole is also serving two life sentences for rape.

According to court records, Cole and a friend, William Paul, befriended the two college students in the Ocala National Forest. After talking around a fire, the men offered to take the siblings to see a pond. While away from the campsite, Cole and Paul jumped the victims and robbed them.

The brother, 18, who was a student at Florida State University, was beaten, had his throat slit and left in the forest. His sister, who was 21 and a senior at Eckerd College, was taken back to the campsite, where Cole tied her up and raped her.

The woman was left tied to a tree overnight and raped again the next day. She eventually managed to free herself and flag down a driver for help. Police found her brother’s body lying face down on the ground, according to court records.

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the death warrant for Cole last month.

Lawyers for Cole, 57, raised several points in their appeal, including the fact that Cole was an inmate at a state-run reform school where he and other boys were beaten and raped. The state has since apologized for the abuse and this year passed a law authorizing reparations for inmates at the now-shuttered reform school.

The state Supreme Court rejected the defense’s arguments.

Paul and Cole were convicted of first-degree murder. Paul was sentenced to life.

The execution will be the first in Florida since Michael Zack was put to death last October for the 1996 killing of Ravonne Smith.

Loran Cole Execution

A Florida man convicted of killing a college freshman and raping the murder victim’s older sister while the siblings camped in a national forest 30 years ago was executed Thursday.

Loran Cole, 57, received a lethal injection and was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. at Florida State Prison for the 1994 killing of the 18-year-old student. Cole also was serving two life sentences for rape.

Cole did not have a last statement. “No sir,” he said when asked if he had some final words.

After the procedure began about 6 p.m. Cole briefly looked up at a witness in the front row. After three minutes, he began taking deep breaths, his cheeks puffing out. For a brief moment, his entire body trembled. Five minutes into the procedure, the warden shook him and shouted his name. Cole then appeared to stop breathing and then was declared dead

Cole and a friend, William Paul, befriended the two college students in the Ocala National Forest, court records showed. After talking around a fire, the men offered to take the siblings to see a pond. While away from the campsite, Cole and Paul jumped the victims and robbed them, according to the records.

The brother, 18, who was a student at Florida State University, was beaten and had his throat slit and left in the forest. His sister, then a 21-year-old senior at Eckerd College, was taken back to the campsite, where Cole tied her up and raped her, according to the record.

The woman was left tied to a tree overnight and raped again the next day. She eventually managed to free herself and flagged down a driver for help. Police found her brother’s body lying face down on the ground, according to court records.

Paul and Cole were both convicted of first-degree murder. Paul was sentenced to life in prison.

Although they did not attend the execution, the parents of the victims had a statement read afterward by corrections officials. They wrote about how the murder of their son and the attack on their daughter had shattered their lives. But they said their daughter had gone on to become a wife, teacher and professor.

“Though invisible to others, our daughter bears internal scars that will never go away. She battled years of fear, pain and sorrow,” the statement said. “She is our hero.”

“We are void of feelings and empathy for Mr. Cole. He placed himself into this arena,” it added. “He does not deserve mercy.”

The Associated Press does not generally identify victims of sexual assault unless they come forward publicly.

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the death warrant for Cole last month.

The execution was the first in Florida since Michael Zack was put to death last October for the 1996 killing of Ravonne Smith.

Department of Corrections officials described Cole as “compliant” in the hours before his execution and said he had two visitors, including his son.

The U.S. Supreme Court denied Cole’s final appeal earlier Thursday.

His lawyers had raised several points in seeking a stay of execution, including the fact that Cole was an inmate at a state-run reform school where he and other boys were beaten and raped. The state has since apologized for the abuse and this year passed a law authorizing reparations for inmates at the now-shuttered reform school. The lawyers also argued Cole shouldn’t be executed because he was mentally ill and had brain damage and Parkinson’s disease.

Toronto police continue to look for a 33-year-old man wanted for murder in connection with the deaths of his two female relatives.

On Friday afternoon, officers found an 82-year-old woman and a 60-year-old woman dead inside a home in the area of Sheldon and Silvercrest avenues. Police said a concerned family member called them to ask that they check on their relatives at that Etobicoke home

We came here to confirm that they were okay and, unfortunately, did not work out that way,” Det. Sgt. Jason Davis of the homicide unit told reporters on Friday. He did not disclose the nature of their injuries.

The women are the city’s 53rd and 54th homicide victims of this year.

Davis said police were “actively looking” for a relative of the victims, Joseph Ayala, who is wanted for two counts of second-degree murder.

While police have not identified the victims, a family member told CTV News Toronto that Ayala lived in the home with his mother and grandmother.

The family member said the 33-year-old, who was raised in the home, has been struggling with mental illness and not taking his prescribed medication regularly.

Speaking to CTV News Toronto, the neighbours said the grandmother was named Colleen, while the mother was named Sherry.

Linda Robinson grew up in the neighbourhood and said she knew the family well, sharing that she would always see Colleen outside her home and talk to her.

“I don’t know if I could do this. Because I’m looking for her outside on her chair, she’s supposed to be out there, but she’s not out there. It’s hard,” Robinson said.

Police have released photos of Ayala, who is described as five-foot-11 and has a shaved head. He is known to wear a cowboy hat, a cowboy-style jacket with tassels on the sleeve and black cowboy boots.

“If the public does see Mr. Ayala, please call 9-1-1. Please do not engage with him. Contact us, and we will be there as quickly as possible,” Davis said.

Susan Armstrong, who has lived in the area for more than five decades, saw Ayala walk by her house Friday morning with the clothes police mentioned he was last seen wearing. She told CTV News Toronto that she felt “sick.”

“Because now it concerns me if he has not been found that he’s in some of these garden sheds, and he’ll still show up. So we’ll keep our doors locked. That’s for sure,” Armstrong said.

Another neighbour, Zelia Vouloukos, also saw Ayala Friday.

“I got like the creeps because I’m sitting on my porch, and he’s just walking up and down the street, and he’s talking to himself, and then he disappears,” Vouloukos told CTV News Toronto.

Davis said it was too early in the investigation to determine the motive.

As of Saturday afternoon, Ayala remains at large.

Nolan Grove Murders Kain Heiland

Nolan Grove

Nolan Grove is an alleged teen killer from Pennsylvania who has been charged as an adult in the murder of twelve year old Kain Heiland

According to police reports Nolan Grove, who was thirteen years old at the time, would fatally shoot twelve year old Kain Heiland.

Apparently Kain Heiland made a joke about Nolan Grove mother and that is when Nolan would pull out a gun and shoot the twelve year old in the back

Nolan Grove would be arrested and has been charged with third degree murder. If convicted Nolan could spend the next forty years in prison

Nolan Grove News

A York County teenager accused of killing a 12-year-old boy will be in court today to find out if he will still be charged as an adult.

Nolan Grove is currently facing third-degree murder charges as an adult for the shooting death of Kain Heiland. Grove was only 13 when the shooting happened in April of 2023 in Red Lion.

The judge has ruled that there is enough evidence for Grove to stand trial.

Friday’s hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the York County Courthouse.

Kain Heiland, 12, was shot and killed on Saturday, April 1, 2023 in Red Lion. At a news conference held days after the shooting, York County District Attorney Dave Sunday said that Grove shot Heiland in the back.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, a witness told investigators that Grove made a joke about Heiland’s mother. Heiland told Grove to shut up, and then Grove allegedly shot Heiland once.
Key evidence

At the same news conference, Sunday said witnesses and video were key evidence for the grand jury.

Charging documents indicate surveillance cameras inside the home of a boy who was with Grove and Heiland captured Grove pointing the red laser light of the gun at Heiland and Heiland saying, “Take your finger off the trigger.”

Police also said a two-hour FaceTime call placed by the third boy showed Grove pointing the gun at Heiland while Heiland was on the ground and shielding his face.

The boy said he heard Grove say after the shooting, “I am so sorry, K.” “K” is apparently short for “Kain.”

Witnesses also told police Grove threatened other children.

At one point, he approached two girls who he thought had his friend’s scooter. One of the girls said Grove told them he wasn’t afraid to shoot someone and would if he could.

Another witness said Grove pointed the gun at the girls as he walked away.

In 2023, Heiland’s mother said she thought the charges against Grove should be stronger.

“I think it should have been first- or second-degree murder because I feel like it was premeditated. I feel like he planned out to kill my son,” Devin Rexroth said.

She also has a question for Grove.

“I would ask him why he killed my son because I’m just not understanding why he would do that,” Rexroth said.

According to police reports a fire would rage through a home in Plant City Florida killing four members of the family and killing three of their dogs. The only resident of the home not injured was Shawn Gossett

After speaking with police Shawn Gossett would reportedly admit to setting the house on fire however he would not give officers any reason on why. Shawn Gossett was not related to the family that died

Shawn Gossett would be arrested and has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder along with charges of animal cruelty and arson.

Shawn Gossett News

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man after he intentionally started a house fire, resulting in the deaths of four people and three dogs.

On July 31, 2024, at 12:08 a.m., HCSO received a call about a potential fire on South County Line Road.

While Hillsborough County Fire Rescue was extinguishing the house fire, they discovered four deceased adults inside.

Through investigative means, detectives learned Shawn Gossett, 25, a resident of the home, started the fire with the intent to burn the house down.

Based on the investigation, detectives arrested and charged Gossett with four counts of Murder in the First Degree While Engaged in Arson, three counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, and one count of Arson of a Dwelling.

“This is an utterly senseless and horrific crime where four innocent lives were tragically taken due to the evil actions of this man,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “I want to commend our detectives and our partners at Hillsborough County Fire Rescue for their swift actions which resulted in the arrest of this individual and their relentless efforts to ensure justice is served.”

At this time, HCSO is working in collaboration with the Medical Examiner’s Office and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue on positively identifying the victims. This information will be released once it is available.

Hillsborough County 911 dispatchers received a terrifying call just after midnight Wednesday morning — three people and five dogs were trapped in a burning home near Plant City.

Rescuers arrived to find a house roaring with fire. They discovered three people in one part of the home and pulled them out a window. They found a fourth in another part of the home.

All were dead. So were three dogs.

Hours later, sheriff’s officials announced a swift arrest: A man who had lived at the house had intentionally set it ablaze with a Bic lighter and paper towels.

The people killed were all family members, though the man accused of the crimes, Shawn Gossett, 25, was not. He was charged with four counts of first-degree murder along with charges of animal cruelty and arson.

Sheriff’s officials said Gossett, who was uninjured, admitted to the crimes, but his motive was unclear.

“This is an utterly senseless and horrific crime where four innocent lives were tragically taken due to the evil actions of this man,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a news release.

In a news conference, Hillsborough Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer told reporters that Gossett was friends with the family and they lived together at 6655 S. County Line Road.

Firefighters arrived there about eight minutes after being dispatched and worked to put out the blaze, fire rescue officials said. Crews brought the fire under control within 20 minutes.

The sheriff’s office is working with the Medical Examiner’s Office and Fire Rescue to identify the victims.

Property records show the main building on the 3.85-acre property is a two-bedroom manufactured home built in 1994. Edison Arias bought the property in 2020.

Arias declined to comment when reached Wednesday morning before the sheriff’s office announced Gossett’s arres
