The investigation continues into how a teenager linked to three major incidents that occurred Jan. 8 managed to escape from custody.
Saul Garcia Rodriguez, 17, is connected to a crash on San Bernardo where two undocumented people died at the scene. Rodriguez escaped custody and stole a DPS unit, abandoning it near Lake Casa Blanca.
Video given to KGNS shows an officer firing his weapon after Rodriguez stole a separate pickup truck. That officer is on administrative reassignment as an investigation continues.
After that incident, Rodriguez led DPS, LPD, Border Patrol and other county law enforcement agencies in a chase that ended near U.S. Highway 83. Rodriguez was caught and arrested.
The heavy law enforcement presence during the chase prompted many in Laredo to speak out on social media about the events.
Liliana De La Fuente, who works at a business along U.S. 83, heard the commotion of sirens outside her place of work Thursday afternoon.
“Well it did surprise us. We got scared,” De La Fuente said.
Karina Perez was relieved Rodriguez was caught in the massive efforts to apprehend him.
“Well I think that each person does their job and if that’s the best way they can achieve that then it’s fine. They’re stopping him, so he doesn’t cause anything worse,” Perez said.
Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino, commented on the incident involving Laredo police and supports their actions.
“We have strict guidelines in pursuits of vehicles here in the city to avoid any possible accidents and to go by protocol. This incident was carried out in the correct way when the policeman got involved,” Trevino said.
Rodriguez is facing a total of ten charges, including two counts of murder and two counts of smuggling of person causing death.
