A Collin County jury sentenced a 17-year-old to life in prison Thursday for bludgeoning his mother inside their McKinney home last year.

Adam Barney pleaded guilty to murder in the death of Stacy Barney. He was 15 when he hit his 50-year-old mother with a hammer and choked her Jan. 3, 2021. Testimony in his sentencing trial began Tuesday.

The jury deliberated for nearly three hours before reaching its decision, according to court records. Jurors weighed a sentence of five to 99 years in prison or life in prison

Home surveillance video captured the attack that lasted several minutes. The teen is seen going into the garage and retrieving a hammer and screwdriver, according to testimony at hearings last year over whether Barney would be tried as an adult. He then went into the living room, where Stacy Barney was sitting on the couch, and struck her repeatedly on the head with the hammer.

State District Judge Andrea Thompson only allowed portions of the video to be shown to the jury. At a hearing last week, defense attorney April Steele said the video is “so shocking” jurors “would not be able to entertain other evidence.”

Prosecutor Christina Skipper said the video shows Barney’s demeanor while carrying out the crime, overkill and premeditation.

Steele, Barney’s lawyer, said in a statement Thursday the “jury chose not to see past the severity of the conduct.”

“While respecting the decision of the jury, the defense team did our absolute best to humanize our client by presenting an extensive history of mental health challenges and sexual abuse suffered by a 15-year-old boy,” the statement said.

Testimony at the hearings last year revealed the boy had been in and out of residential treatment facilities and juvenile detention throughout his life. Barney reported that he was sexually abused during a stay in a rehabilitation center and alleged a former McKinney ISD educator performed sexual acts on him.

A 39-year-old Texas mother may spend the rest of her life in prison after being convicted of beating her 4-year-old daughter to death in 2017.

A Bexar County jury on Monday found Jessica Briones guilty on one count each of murder and injury to a child in the death of young Olivia Brionescourt records reviewed by Law&Crime show. The jury took less than an hour to convict Briones, per the San Antonio Express-News.

According to a report from San Antonio Fox affiliate KABB, Briones on Sept. 5, 2017 brought Olivia to the San Antonio Police Department substation on Prue Road. The child was reportedly unresponsive when she arrived at the station and was rushed to University Hospital for emergency treatment.

A police report obtained by the station reportedly said that Briones told investigators that Olivia had slept through her normal wake-up time and continued to sleep until about noon. That’s when the child awoke and began throwing up, Briones reportedly told police.

Briones reportedly told police that she was on her way to seek medical attention for the child when the child stopped breathing. Briones explained that she then came to the police station because it was closer, per the report. The mother reportedly added that she then began researching possible causes of vomiting in young children and found that head trauma was a possible cause.

An affidavit cited by the local news outlet said that Briones told investigators that she accidentally slammed a door on Olivia’s arm a few days prior to bringing her to the station. Investigators executed a search warrant on Briones’ home where they reportedly discovered a bowl of vomit next to the bed where Olivia slept.

Olivia was pronounced dead one day after arriving at the hospital. Doctors said she sustained a spate of horrific injuries, including “severe bleeding in her head, swelling of the brain, a black right eye, fractured vertebrae, [and] a deflated left lung,” as the KABB report described it.

Briones was apparently unable to provide any explanation as to how the child sustained such severe injuries to her head and was subsequently arrested and charged in Olivia’s death.

During the three-week trial, prosecutors reportedly showed extensive evidence indicating that Briones had been physically assaulting Olivia for a long period of time prior to the 4-year-old’s death.

Photographs placed into evidence by the state showing the extensive injuries to Olivia’s body caused members of the jury to cry on multiple occasions, the Express-News reported. Those pictures included “images of the child’s arms, which appeared deformed, and numerous scars and indented head injuries on her scalp,” as the report put it.

Prosecutors repeatedly told the jury that Briones got pregnant when she was just a student and “resented” her daughter. They reportedly said she likely beat the child to death with a metal bar that came in a garment box.

Briones’ attorney reportedly argued that the child could have sustained her injuries by falling down any of three flights of stairs in the home without her mother knowing. Testifying in her own defense, Jessica Briones told jurors that for the last five years she had “picked apart” everything she did and couldn’t figure out where she’d gone wrong.

She faces life in prison when she appears in court for her sentencing hearing.

A man was sentenced to death on Wednesday for the fatal 2019 shooting of a law enforcement officer who was the first Sikh deputy in his Texas agency.

A Harris county jury deliberated for about 35 minutes before returning the death sentence for Robert Solis, 50, after convicting him of capital murder on 17 October in Harris county sheriff’s deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal’s killing.

According to trial evidence, Solis shot the 42-year-old deputy multiple times during a 2019 traffic stop in a residential cul-de-sac 18 miles (29km) north-west of Houston. Dhaliwal was returning to his patrol car when Solis shot him from behind.

“The defendant executed a uniformed deputy by shooting him in cold blood in broad daylight. That makes him the worst of the worst, which is why we asked jurors to sentence him to death,” Harris county district attorney Kim Ogg, a Democrat, said in a statement.

Solis represented himself in the trial after firing his three defense attorneys.

Prosecutors had told jurors that Solis had a lengthy criminal record of robberies and sexual predation leading up to Dhaliwal’s killing.

Assistant district attorney Katie Warren, who prosecuted the case, said in a statement on Wednesday that Dhaliwal was not just a trailblazer in the law enforcement community but also an exceptional officer.

“Deputy Dhaliwal was a pillar of this community, and when it came to law enforcement, he set the bar,” Warren said. “His loss is a loss that every single one of us feels. We’re glad today that this jury was able to give justice.”

Tyler Roenz More News

Tyler Roenz, 17, and his mother, Michelle Roenz, 49, were reported missing from their home in Humble last week.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Tyler is also being charged with tampering with evidence in his mother’s death.

Tyler remains in custody of Nebraska police pending his extradition to Harris County, deputies said.

Details from charging documents highlight the bizarre scene found at the family’s home.

Tyler’s father told Harris County sheriff’s deputies that his wife and son were missing and he was unable to contact them. He also said their 2011 Mazda 3 was missing from the home.

The father reportedly told deputies his son was allowed to use the car, but only to go certain places.

After noticing the missing vehicle, Tyler’s father found a human tooth and blood in the garage, documents state. He reportedly followed a trail of blood into the primary bedroom of the house, where he found at least four additional human teeth in a pool of blood.

Investigators reportedly observed other signs of apparent foul play in the home, though it’s unclear what they found.

The father also found his wife’s cell phone and purse in the home, according to court documents. He tried to track his son’s phone using the app Life360, but discovered his son had deleted the app and his phone was turned off.

Surveillance video reportedly showed the Mazda 3 leaving the house at 11:44 a.m.

Charges on Michelle’s credit card were pinged in Humble, Texas; Richardson, Texas; Atoka, Oklahoma; and Chetopa, Kansas. The car’s license plate also pinged on a reader near Dallas, documents revealed.

After speaking to the father, investigators issued a CLEAR Alert for both Michelle and Tyler.

Investigators alerted the Nebraska State Patrol after receiving information that the vehicle was possibly traveling in the state.

Shortly after the alert, the NSP located the Mazda 3 around two-and-a-half hours west of Omaha, traveling westbound on I-80 near Grand Island, investigators said.

Troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver fled.

The chase, which reached speeds over 110 mph, ended in a crash, investigators said. The Mazda reportedly attempted to slow down but struck the rear of a semi-truck, left the roadway, and hit a tree in a ditch.

Troopers found Tyler behind the wheel of the car. He was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, deputies said. At last check, he was still hospitalized.

“The crash occurred near Aurora, Nebraska,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a tweet. “The male driver has been identified as missing teen Tyler Roenz. Tyler is being treated at a hospital and said to be in serious condition.”

In the trunk of the crashed car, investigators found the body of Michelle. Initial reports indicate she died from strangulation and blunt force trauma, HCSO said.

Homicide investigators are working with Nebraska authorities to extradite Tyler back to Texas. Investigators urge anyone with information to contact the HCSO homicide unit at (713) 274-9100.

Michelle was described as a fierce animal advocate, mother and wife, and was well-regarded, neighbors said.

Tyler was more mysterious. According to court documents, he was charged with attempted sexual assault earlier in 2022 and was out on a $10,000 bond. He’s accused of attacking an 18-year-old girl in his car, ripping her shirt off, and grabbing her in a school parking lot.

He is not enrolled in Humble ISD, where his sister was a valedictorian in 2020.

Humble ISD confirmed that the teenager was a former student in their district.
