Jail records show that the mother of an 8-year-old girl who was found dead inside a Merced home has now been charged with her first-degree murder.

According to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office jail booking website, 30-year-old Samantha Johnson was booked into the main jail on a charge of first-degree murder on Tuesday.

On Friday, Johnson’s 8-year-old daughter Sophia Mason was reported missing to the Hayward Police Department

Hayward police reached out to the Merced Police Department about Mason’s disappearance, prompting detectives to meet with Johnson for an interview.

During the interview, officers say Johnson provided them with the address of the home in Merced where Mason’s body was later discovered.

A short time later, a state-wide manhunt began for Johnson’s boyfriend, 34-year-old Dhante Jackson, who officials say lives at the home where Mason was found.

Officers say Jackson ‘went on the run’ shortly after learning his home had been searched and a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Jackson is reportedly known to frequent the Bay Area.

Anyone who has seen Jackson or knows his whereabouts is asked to call the Merced Police Department at 209-385-4725.

Samantha Johnson Other News

Authorities have identified the body discovered in a Merced home last week as Sophia Mason, an 8-year-old girl from Hayward, who was reported missing March 8.

The confirmation, announced by the Merced County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau Tuesday afternoon, comes four days after Sophia’s mother, Samantha Johnson, was arrested on murder charges by Merced police. A manhunt is underway for Johnson’s boyfriend, Dhante Jackson, 34, who lived in the home where Mason’s body was found.

The coroner’s bureau has not released a cause of death for Sophia, citing a pending autopsy.

“We’re broken,” Melissa Harris, a cousin of Sophia’s, said in an interview Tuesday afternoon. “I think we all knew but we wanted to hold onto a tiny shred of hope that it wasn’t her of course.”

Sophia was last seen with her 30-year-old mother, Samantha Johnson, in the Merced area. Her aunt, Emerald Johnson, told this news organization that she reported Sophia missing to the Hayward Police Department on March 8 after what she described as a “disturbing” phone call between Samantha Johnson and her mother, in which Samantha said that she was planning to travel from Merced to the Bay Area without Sophia because she “gave her away.”

Hayward police arrested Samantha Johnson on March 10 on a warrant stemming from a 2021 case of child abuse in Alameda County. Cassondra Fovel, a spokesperson for the Hayward Police Department, said Tuesday that the child abuse case was referred to the department by Alameda County’s Children and Family Services in October 2021 but that the county agency determined it to be “unfounded” at that time. During the investigation into the disappearance of Sophia, however, police said they were given new information to pursue charges.

The following day, Hayward police contacted the Merced Police Department about an “at-risk missing juvenile” and provided the agency with a possible address where Sophia was last seen, in the 500 block of Barclay Way in Merced. While executing a search warrant, officers discovered the body of a young girl in the home.

Johnson was initially booked into Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail but is being transferred to Merced County Jail, where she will be arraigned on her charges.

The Merced Police Department has also issued a murder warrant for Jackson, who is believed to be on the run after hearing that police were searching his home, where Sophia’s body was found. Jackson is reportedly known to frequent the Bay Area and police are asking for assistance in locating him.

For most of her life, Sophia had been raised primarily in Hayward by her aunt Emerald and her grandmother, although neither of them had formal custody of her. Her mother, meanwhile, bounced around between homes, hotels and homeless shelters in the Bay Area and Southern California, according to relatives.

In January 2021, however, Samantha Johnson removed Sophia from her grandmother’s home and began taking Sophia with her as she moved between the Bay Area and Southern California, according to Emerald Johnson, who said Sophia was unexcused from school for nearly two months. The Hayward Unified School District, where Sophia attended school, did not immediately return requests for comment.

Since her sister took Sophia under her care, Emerald Johnson said that she filed several reports with Alameda County’s Children and Family Services and the Hayward Police Department, including the most recent missing person report, regarding concerns about Sophia’s health and welfare under the supervision of her sister, Samantha Johnson.

Sophia’s aunt Emerald described the 8-year-old girl as “very sweet, very caring and very nurturing.”

“She loved to play with almost anything and loved to dance,” she said. “She’d always want us to watch her sing and dance.”

After Sophia spent an extended period of time with her mom, Emerald Johnson said relatives noticed a decline in her energy level and general demeanor, as well as bruising and scabs on her body.

“She was always such a joy and was so sweet, but there was a huge difference from when she left and when we saw her again,”  she said.

Before getting official confirmation on Monday, Sophia’s relatives started a GoFundMe over the weekend for her funeral expenses, as they said they were already “operating under the assumption” that the body found in Merced was Sophia’s.

In addition to mourning and planning services, Harris said the family is also working to ensure that her cousin’s alleged accomplice, Jackson, is apprehended.

“I know this won’t make it right,” Harris said. “Sophia’s gone, but we do want police to find him and bring him to justice.”

Joel Mosso Merino More News

Fairfax County police have charged 27-year-old Joel Mosso Merino in the murder of missing woman Hannah Choi. They do not have Merino in custody and say he’s on the run.

Choi, 35, was reported missing on March 6 after she was last seen around 7 a.m. on March at the home she shared with Merino in the 5300 block of Jesmond Street in the Alexandria area of Kingstowne.

Merino is being charged with second-degree murder and the disposal of a body, announced Chief Kevin Davis.

Police said they know something bad happened and that Choi is deceased. Search and rescue teams are currently searching for Hannah’s body in Piscataway Park in Accokeek, Maryland.

“We believe that Joelle Merino took Hannah’s body and disposed of her body in a park in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Piscataway Park,” Davis said.

A search for Merino is also underway. They believe he fled south to Georgia, but they believe he may have since left the state or could be back in Virginia.

Our victim, 35-year-old Hannah Choi, did nothing wrong,” Major Ed O’Carroll said.

Friends went to her home on March 6 when she couldn’t be reached.

“Her friends contacted law enforcement at the serious concern for her well-being,” said O’ Caroll. “Officers our patrol officers rapidly responded and ultimately check the house and the house appeared generally to be an order, except for bedding — which appeared to be missing from one of the bedrooms.”

Through interviews with friends and neighbors, they believe Merino and Choi argues on March 5. Surveillance footage captured the two together that evening.

Detectives believe at some point Hannah was “significantly” injured inside the home and Merino removed her body from home and took her to another location.

Police identified a vehicle operated by Merino that night and the next day. Police later found that vehicle in Washington D.C. on March 7.

Evidence from the car suggests Hannah was harmed prior to her disappearance, police said.

Choi, who is described as 5-foot-4 and 125 pounds with black eyes and brown hair, has a tattoo of a Chinese symbol on her ankle.

Working with U.S. Marshals, police believe Merino fled the state.

“He’s actively wanted for murder, so use caution,” O’Carroll said. “If you know his whereabouts call 911 immediately notify law enforcement right away.”

They believe he was in the Atlanta, Georgia area at some point after he fled, but he may have returned to Virginia.

Police also are focusing their search for Choi in Piscataway Park because Merino spent time in the park the night and into the next morning of her disappearance.

Police say Merino doesn’t have a criminal history. and there are no history of calls to the home.

“He’s on the run. He’s desperate and desperate people are prone to violence,” police said.

Police are asking the public to help them find Merino or to share any information they might have on the case. Merino is described as 5-foot-7 and 230 pounds.

A 23-year-old man from Anton has been found guilty of the 2017 murder of his father, Brandon Allen. The jury deliberated for nearly five hours.

The murder trial began on Wednesday for Payden Shaine Allen. He was identified as the suspect after authorities were called to his father’s home near Anton. Brandon Allen was expected at a family gathering in San Antonio and never showed up, so the family called authorities for a welfare check. On June 10, 2017, police found his body in the living room. He had been shot.

Two psychologists told the jury, based on tests, Payden does have an intellectual disability, including autistic patterns. During interviews with psychologists, Payden admitted he was in fear of his father, telling them his father caused him to lose consciousness on five occasions.

Payden’s caregivers stated before the shooting, his behavior became “aggressive,” including yelling and at one point hiding weapons.

Gerald Brevard Charged In Homeless Killings

gerald brevard homeless

Gerald Brevard has been arrested and charged with a string of attacks on the homeless in both New York and Washington. According to police reports Gerald Brevard allegedly murdered  54-year-old Morgan Holmes by shooting and stabbing. Gerald Brevard is also charged with a number of assaults on the homeless as well as being investigating a string of shootings that took place in Washington where the suspect used a .22 caliber gun and targeted the homeless. Five people have been shot in New York and Washington over the last two weeks. Gerald Brevard who is a convicted felon helped investigators capture him by posting a photo on social media showing that he was in Washington. As well as State charges Gerald Brevard may face Federal Charges as well.

Gerald Brevard More News

The suspected killer accused of targeting homeless men in Washington D.C., and New York City was identified Tuesday, hours after he was arrested amid a manhunt by multiple law enforcement agencies.

Gerald Brevard III, 30, a D.C. resident, was taken into custody in Washington around 2:30 a.m. after the Metropolitan Police Department received an anonymous tip that provided a possible identity of the suspect, Chief Robert Contee III said.

“Based on all the evidence we’ve pulled together in this case, the video evidence, the images that we’ve seen, I am very confident that this is the person,” he said Tuesday.

Gerald Brevard is charged with first-degree murder while armed for the shooting and stabbing death of 54-year-old Morgan Holmes, assault with intent to kill and assault with a dangerous weapon. More charges for his alleged crimes in New York are anticipated.

He could also face federal charges, officials said.

After receiving the tip, investigators said Brevard posted an image on social media that appeared to show him in Washington D.C., Contee said. Authorities unsuccessfully tried locating him and an image of him at an ATM was released Monday evening during a joint news conference with New York City officials in which they urges the homeless in both cities to seek shelter.

Surveillance video obtained by Fox DC showed Brevard being arrested at a gas station by agents with the Washington Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

“I knew that if he was in D.C. with that image, he would be found,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said.

Authorities noted that Brevard was arrested in the early morning hours, around the same time when the victims were shot

He has not offered a motive for the crimes, Contee said and investigators believe the shootings and killings were committed randomly. Between both cities, five homeless people were shot, including two who died

Investigators have not recovered the weapon associated with the crimes, Contee said. In a separate news briefing on Tuesday, NYPD Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell said the response to Monday’s plead for help from the public was “extraordinary.”

“The tips we received through Crime Stoppers and other outlets led us directly to contacts, movements, locations and a name,” she said.

The shootings began on March 3 when a homeless man was shot in Washington. On March 8, another homeless man was shot. Both are recovering, the chief said Tuesday.

Holmes was found dead on March 9 after firefighters extinguished a tent fire. He had multiple stab and gunshot wounds, the MPD said. Ballistics evidence linked all five shootings to one weapon, authorities said.

Brevard allegedly shot one homeless person and killed another in separate incidents in New York on Saturday.

“I send my condolences to the family and friends of the victims,” Contee said. “We hope that Brevard’s arrest provides a sense of closure for you, but also relief for our vulnerable homeless population.

The cases were forensically connected after MPD Capt. Kevin Kentish of the homicide unit was scrolling through social media over the weekend and saw an image of the suspect released by the NYPD in connection with the shootings in New York, MPD Chief Robert Contee III said.

Kentish, a native of Queens, New York, reviewed the image with his team, who were investigating the March 8 murder of Holmes. The cases were connected afterward, the chief said.

Brevard has previous arrests in Washington for allegedly assaulting a police officer in 2018 and assault with a dangerous weapon, Contee said. He has arrests in D.C. dating back to 2016, he said.

In Fairfax County, he was arrested in 2020 on abduction and burglary charges, FOX D.C. reported.

He was enrolled in mental health services and was treated in 2019 for a competency assessment, said D.C.’s Department of Behavioral Health, Barbara Bazron. He was found to be competent to participate in his own defense and released back to jail, she said.

He has not been linked to any other shootings.

A gang member with the moniker “Guilty” was found just that by a jury of his peers on Feb. 3.

The Tulare County District Attorney’s office announced on Feb. 15 that Noel Herrera, 32, was found guilty of multiple murders committed from 2010 to 2017. The jury went so far as to recommend a death sentence as well.

Herrera committed his first shooting murder on Jan. 9, 2010. The victim was a 26-year-old male. In a drive by shooting on April 24, 2014, Herrera shot and killed a 25-year-old male. On Feb. 15, 2017, Herrera was again involved in a drive by shooting. No one was injured in this incident. Three days later on Feb. 18, 2017, Herrera shot and killed a 20-year-old male victim. After being stopped by law enforcement the next day for speeding, a search of his vehicle revealed a firearm that eventually led to ballistic evidence linking him to the Feb. 15, 2017 shooting. All of the crimes took place in the city of Visalia.

After a complete investigation, law enforcement and prosecutors filed the entirety of the case against Herrera in March 2018

On Jan. 18, a jury began hearing evidence in the criminal phase of the case. On Feb. 3, the jury found Herrera guilty of three counts of premeditated first-degree murder with special circumstances and allegations that the crimes constituted multiple murders, and that Herrera personally used a firearm.
