Ricky Allen Dubose More News

Ricky Allen “Juvie” Dubose is the latest inmate in Georgia to be sentenced to death for the crime of murder.

Dubose shot to death Georgia Department of Corrections Sgt. Curtis Bernard Billue and Sgt. Christopher James Monica during an escape from a state prison transport bus on June 13,2017, in Putnam County.

A jury of six men and six women from Glynn County deliberated nearly three hours Thursday afternoon before returning a unanimous verdict of death against the 29-year-old condemned killer in Putnam County Superior Court in Eatonton.

The double-death sentence, plus 20 years, was imposed against Dubose by Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Alison T. Burleson shortly before 3:30 p.m.

The judge reviewed the verdict of the jurors and then told them, along with the five alternate jurors, that they were allowed to stay in the courtroom for the sentencing procedure or they could leave and board a mini-bus back to Glynn County. All 17 jurors opted to leave the courtroom with the thanks of the court for their service.

Dubose stood with Georgia Capital Defender Attorneys Amber Pittman, Nathanael Studelska, Gerald “Jerry” Word and Shayla Galloway, as Burleson imposed the punishment against him. As was the case throughout the trial, Dubose showed no emotion.

Jurors deliberating Dubose’s fate determined there were aggravated circumstances related to the murders of the officers. They both worked in the transportation hub at Baldwin State Prison near Milledgeville. Both men also lived in Baldwin County.

Evidence presented during the 10-day murder trial revealed that Dubose is a member of the Ghost Face Gangsters, a criminal gang that operates in and out of Georgia prisons.

While family members of the slain officers received the justice they had been seeking for their loved ones, others in the courtroom, including his wife, could be seen crying for Dubose. The couple reportedly married some time ago while Dubose awaited trial in the five-year-old double-murder case.

Members of the Billue and Monica families embraced several people who joined them in the courtroom gallery to support them. Many of them included employees and officials from the Georgia Department of Corrections, as well as church groups, victim advocates from the district attorney’s office, along with District Attorney T. Wright Barksdale III, Chief Assistant District Attorney Allison Mauldin, Assistant District Attorney Blyne May and Putnam County Sheriff Howard R. Sills.

Dubose, who had worn dress slacks, a long sleeve dress shirt and a necktie every day of his trial, was immediately handcuffed after sentencing. He then met briefly with his defense team and was then told to change from his dress clothes into white inmate prison garb before he was placed into the rear seat of a patrol car and taken back to the Georgia Special Management Unit (SMU) prison near Jackson.

He now is among more than 40 men and one woman on death row in Georgia.

Ricky Allen Dubose Suicide

A 29-year-old man has died behind bars more than a week after he was sentenced to death for murdering two prison guards in Georgia

Ricky Allen Dubose hanged himself, a local law enforcement official said, according to The Union-Recorder.

“He committed suicide,” Putnam County Sheriff Howard R. Sill told the outlet. “The suicide could be done about as quick as it took for him to murder Billue and Monica. It doesn’t take long to do It. If somebody is going to do it, it can happen in a matter of seconds.”

The sheriff said he confirmed Dubose’s death with Georgia Department of Corrections personnel. The agency did not specify a cause of death in a press release issued Sunday.

“On June 26, at approximately 4:45 p.m., Correctional Officers found inmate Ricky Dubose (GDC#1000492869) unresponsive in his cell,” officials said. “Emergency Medical Services were called and life saving measures were performed. Dubose was pronounced deceased by the coroner at the facility at 5:56 p.m. GDC, in conjunction with the GBI is conducting an investigation into the death, as standard procedure.”

Dubose’s defense mourned for him, said a member of the team.

“This is extremely devastating to all of us, even though I’d only known Ricky closely for about a year,” attorney Gerald “Jerry” Word told The Union-Recorder. “Amber Pittman and Nathanael Studelska had gotten to know him for five years. And Shayla Galloway had gotten to know him well, too.”

Dubose and fellow inmate Donnie Rowe overpowered two prison guards — officers Curtis Billue and Christopher Monica — on a prison transport bus in June 2017. Dubose took one of their guns, and fatally shot them. He and Rowe fled after carjacking a nearby driver, reaching Tennessee. They held a couple hostage, tied them up, took their valuables and clothes, and threatened them to keep quiet, Bedford County Sheriff Austin Swing said at the time, according to The Associated Press. But the fugitives ultimately surrendered. Law enforcement said they gave themselves up not to officials, but to a local man.

“I realized I had two ex-cons wanted for murder who had just shot at law enforcement who had nothing to lose and for some reason they surrendered and laid down on the concrete in my driveway,” Patrick Hale told the AP at the time. “If that doesn’t make you believe in Jesus Christ, I don’t know what does.”

Although both men separately went to trial and were convicted, Dubose was the one who received the death penalty as the actual gunman. Rowe received a sentence of life in prison without parole. Dubose’s attorneys argued in court that Rowe was the one directing their client’s actions, and that their client was intellectually disabled.

“Ricky did shoot at people, Ricky did,” attorney Gabrielle Pittman said, according to WMAZ. “But you know who was driving, you know who put the gun in his hands, you know who told him to hang out the window and shoot? That was Donnie.”

Prosecutor T. Wright Barksdale called Dubose “an intelligent, calculated criminal,” however.

Billue and Monica’s families welcomed the verdict and sentence against Dubose.

“The closure that the judicial system has brought to us has given us great hope because I know the next step is going to be healing,” Curtis’ sister Denise Billue said, according to WMAZ in a June 16 report.  “We know that we will never move on without Curt, but we will move forward.”

“I’m extremely grateful for everybody involved in making this happen and getting justice for my dad,” Christopher’s daughter Zoey Monica said. “I’m just excited about getting to finally feel some sort of peace with everything.”

Robert Findlay Smith Kills 3 People At Alabama Church

Robert Findlay Smith

Robert Findlay Smith is a seventy year old from Birmingham Alabama who opened fire at a Alabama church potluck that left three people dead. According to police reports Robert Findlay Smith was sitting at a table and according to witnesses suddenly stood up and pulled out a gun and began firing. Robert Findlay Smith would allegedly murder Walter Rainey, 84, Sarah Yeager, 75, who would die at the scene and Jane Pounds, 84, who died of her injuries the next day. Robert Findlay Smith who worked as a gun dealer was arrested and has been charged with the three murders

Robert Findlay Smith More News

A Vestavia Hills man is now formally charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of a man and two women during a church potluck supper Thursday night.

Robert Findlay Smith, 70, is charged in the slayings of Walter “Bart” Rainey, 84, of Irondale, Sarah Yeager, 75, of Pelham and a Jane Pounds, 84, of Hoover.

The charge against Smith is capital because two or more people were killed in the shooting. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 3:33 p.m.

District Attorney Danny Carr announced the warrants. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ families and friends along with the entire Vestavia Hills community,’’ Carr said.

Robert Findlay Smith, described by police as the “lone suspect,” was taken into custody after police were called at 6: 22 p.m. to an active shooter at the church. He was held in the Vestavia Hills City Jail overnight and will now be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held without bond.

Smith lives near Cahaba Heights and police blocked off his roadway for much of Friday afternoon while they carried out a search warrant at his Sicard Hollow home. Public records show Smith is an ATF licensed firearms dealer, with a business called Original Magazines 2 at 4128 Sicard Hollow Road, which is also his home address.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive in the shooting, and court records don’t list any prior violent crimes for Smith. He received a DUI in 2016, and went to driving school.

Robert Findlay Smith pleaded guilty and received a $465 fine to DUI in Chattanooga on November 2005 case in which he was also charged with possession of a handgun while intoxicated. That charge was dropped.

Smith in 2008 sued Samford University and UAB police Officer Jeremy Burchfield, A UAB police officer who detained him on Samford’s campus. The suit said Smith was illegally detained in 2007 for carrying a firearm on campus and impersonating a police office by carrying a badge. He claimed in the suit there was no evidence of that and the allegations were fabricated by Samford and police.

His lawyer argued that “Many of Plaintiff’s customers are law enforcement personnel and merchants who sell firearms in Jefferson County and outside of Jefferson County throughout the state.”

He won a jury verdict with damages of $29,000 against Burchfield.

Last night’s incident happened during a “Boomers Potluck” dinner that started at 5 p.m. at the church. There were about 25 at the dinner in the parish hall.

Robert Findlay Smith was sitting alone, and a longtime church member approached him and invited him to sit at a table, said the Rev. Doug Carpenter, who founded the church in 1973 and retired in 2005. He identified himself to victim Rainey only as “Mr. Smith” and refused to join them.

He then pulled out a handgun and shot three people, Carpenter said.

Jim Musgrove, a church member, hit the shooter with a chair and wrestled the gun away from him, Carpenter said.

“It was extremely critical in saving lives,’’ said Vestavia Hills police Capt. Shane Ware. “In my opinion, he’s a hero.”

No one at the dinner knew “Mr. Smith,” who claimed he was a former member. “We’re trying to figure out who he is,” Carpenter said.

Law enforcement radio communications during the active shooter situation indicated that police were familiar with the suspect, knowing where he lived and what he drove.

Ware said he could not yet comment on any prior possible involvement with the suspect.

“Any past interactions involving this suspect are currently being investigated by numerous agencies,’’ Ware said. “It would be premature for me at this time to go into that topic.”

“The suspect has previously attended services at this church but as far as the motive behind this, it’s still being looked into by many agencies,’’ Ware said. “It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to speculate.”

“At some point he produced a concealed handgun and began shooting, striking the three victims,’’ Ware said.

“The suspect acted alone,’’ Ware said. “There is no threat to the community.”

Patrick Gilmore More News

A shocking murder that was cold-blooded and calculated, according to Barry County prosecutors.

Patrick Gilmore, 18, showed little emotion over two hours Wednesday as he was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for killing Lane Roslund, 17, in Sept. 2021.

“Every court hearing we have sat here looking for justice or sign of remorse,” said Lane’s mother, Jenipher Roslund, during Gilmore’s sentencing Wednesday. “We see none. Not a tear, not a look of sadness.”

Gilmore was 17 years old when he killed teenager Lane Roslund with a crossbow and buried the teen’s body in his backyard, according to prosecutors.

In his sentencing decision, Judge Schipper determined Gilmore was irreparably corrupt and didn’t meet any non-life sentence criteria for a juvenile offender.

“I don’t think Lane will ever have a day to walk free, and I don’t think Mr. Gilmore should either,” said Barry County Circuit Court Judge Michael Schippers.

Lane Roslund’s parents described him as a loving teenager and the oldest of seven siblings. Jenipher Roslund, and Lane’s father, Michael Roslund, both cried as they delivered their victim impact statements in court.

“There’s been so much hurt in the family when you celebrate your son’s 18th birthday and he’s not there.”

Gilmore researched, planned and even asked his girlfriend for permission before the murder, said David Banister, Barry County chief assistant prosecutor.

A dispute over marijuana led to the killing, according to Banister.

“It’s 100 percent premeditated and done out of anger,” Banister said.

Police found Roslund’s remains in a shallow grave on Gilmore’s property on M-43 in Hastings Township Oct. 13.

For 32 days, Roslund’s family searched for him after he was reported missing around Sept. 10.

Gilmore told detectives he intentionally placed Roslund’s sweatshirt and belongings near the Thornapple River to trick investigators into thinking the teen drowned.

“We endured 32 days of hell,” Roslund said. “We stood nearly feet from my son’s dead body, while talking to the person who murdered my son.”

In March, Gilmore pleaded guilty to open murder and in exchange prosecutors dropped a charge of concealment of a body.

Gilmore declined to provide a statement during his sentencing.

“I don’t know whether he has words or could find words for you, your honor,” Gilmore’s attorney Carol Dwyer told Judge Schippers.

Dwyer argued Wednesday Gilmore should be released on parole after 25 years since he is a juvenile offender and suffered from alcohol and drug abuse.

“A lot can happen in 25 years that can inform us as to where’s there any justification or reason to take a chance on Patrick Gilmore and offer him parole,” Dwyer said.

Prosecutors argued Gilmore has not taken accountability for a long rap rap sheet in juvenile court dating back to 2017, when Gilmore was 13 years old.

“For the vast majority of the four and a half years he was in court, he was supervised, getting services, cared for by our court system,” Banister said.

Gilmore is currently on probation for a larceny. He has also been charged with killing animals, calling in fake bomb threats to school and making a false police report that he killed his parents.

“It’d be very difficult to predict recidivism in a youth that kills,” Judge Schippers said.
