A Pawtucket woman will spend the rest of her life behind bars for the murder of her ex-boyfriend’s mother last year.

Shaylyn Moran, 20, pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and carrying a pistol without a license in the shooting death of Cheryl Smith, 54, according to the office of Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha.

Moran was sentenced to life in prison for the murder, plus consecutive 10-year terms for the additional charges.

On the night of Jan. 1, 2020, Smith was shot several times in the chest at her home on Baxter Street.

The AG’s office said state prosecutors were prepared to prove that Moran was an accomplice in Smith’s murder which was allegedly committed by her fiancé, Jack Doherty.

In the months leading up to the shooting, Moran and Doherty developed a long-distance relationship and conspired to attack her ex-boyfriend, according to the AG’s office. On Dec. 31, 2019, Doherty traveled to Rhode Island from New York to visit Moran and brought a 9mm pistol with him.

The AG’s office said the pair rented a hotel room in Pawtucket and later attended a New Year’s Eve party, where Doherty proposed. When they returned to the room, the couple allegedly decided to go to her ex-boyfriend’s house and shoot whoever opened the door.

At Moran’s instruction, according to the AG’s office, Doherty surveilled the home and eventually knocked on the door, then shot Smith four times when she opened it. First responders rushed Smith to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Pawtucket police said Smith’s son tipped them off that Moran may be responsible, and court-authorized searches of the couple’s phones, social media and rideshare service accounts aided in their investigation.

The day after the shooting, detectives tracked down Moran and Doherty and arrested them as they left the hotel room. Police said Doherty was in possession of the handgun at the time.

Ellen Friar More News

It’s a story that’s shocking to everyone who hears it. A 15-year-old girl, her boyfriend, and friend, conspiring to kill her father.

“He loved his girls above anything and I know his heart is breaking right now,” said Michelle Robinson, the victim’s girlfriend.

Back in October of 2017, 50-year-old Aaron Friar was beaten to death with a baseball bat. Police say his daughter Ellen Rose Friar, who was only 15-years-old at the time, planned the crime along with her boyfriend then 19-year old Gavin Curtis Macfarlane and 22-year-old Russell Pierce Jones II.

Nearly two years later, Macfarlane is serving life in prison after pleading guilty to murder, tampering with physical evidence, and conspiracy to commit murder. The case is still pending against Jones.

Ellen faced a judge for sentencing this past Tuesday.

She read a letter to the court in which she said she can’t erase the past, but has learned forgiveness from Jesus Christ.

“I’m not the same scared little girl I was over a year ago,” said Friar. “I’ve seen all different kinds of people and now see humanity from a new, compassionate perspective.”

Friar’s attorney says the teenager was manipulated by an older boyfriend and claims the girl endured years of emotional and sexual abuse from her father. But because the case didn’t go to trial, that was never proven in court.

“She’s an extremely intelligent, wonderful young woman… [she] made a mistake and I’m hoping she’s able to learn from that,” said her defense attorney, Alyssa Bartholomew.

But others like Aaron Friar’s girlfriend, Michelle Robinson, say there’s no excuse for what she did.

“From what I witnessed Aaron was a great dad. She could have thought of a million different things to do… running away included,” Robinson said.

Friar was sentenced to 25 years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit burglary in the first degree. She will start her sentence in a juvenile facility until she’s 25, which the judge hopes will provide resources for her to reform her life.

Russell Pierce Jones II is scheduled to be back in court in late April, but his case is pending his fitness to proceed.

Heather D’Aoust More News

An uneasy mixture of sadness, anger and compassion hung in the courtroom air yesterday as a 16-year-old girl who fatally bludgeoned her mother with a claw hammer was sentenced to prison.

The mood was punctuated by several heavy sighs from onlookers. One came from the girl’s father, who forgave her for murdering his wife of 30 years. Another came from the judge who sentenced Heather Marie D’Aoust to 16 years to life.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Wellington said that he was convinced Heather suffered from a severe mental health disorder but that it was not a legal defense in this case.

According to court documents, she initially wanted to use a baseball bat and woke up at 4 a.m. to test the weapon on a tree. But she lost her nerve and thought to herself, “I’m insane,” Heather told a probation officer during a pre-sentence interview.

At one point, she planned to kill everyone in the house, including her sister and her sister’s boyfriend, according to the documents. She later thought that she would kill the first person who woke up in the family’s Scripps Ranch home.

Heather pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder and admitted she used a deadly weapon in the May 2008 attack on Rebecca D’Aoust, 56, a teacher and counselor with the San Diego Unified School District.

The teenager also pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon for striking her father with the hammer that morning. He was not seriously injured.

Heather, who was 14 when the crimes occurred, was charged as an adult.

From the day his daughter first appeared at the downtown San Diego courthouse, James D’Aoust insisted she was not “evil” but suffered from mental problems she likely inherited from her biological parents. D’Aoust and his wife adopted Heather as an infant.

Yesterday, he noted she was recently prescribed a “cocktail” of medications that improved her psychological condition.

“The Heather I visit at Juvenile Hall is not that angry girl that killed Becky but the wonderful girl that we raised,” he said.

James D’Aoust said that Heather’s actions caused the family “incredible loss” but that she is now “moving in the right direction” and he would continue to support her.

Heather’s grandfather held a different point of view.

“I just can’t forgive her,” said Richard McGrath, who described his daughter Rebecca as a loving, doting mother.

Heather cried softly as her father and grandfather spoke. When it was her turn, she apologized to her family, including her two older sisters, and told them she loved them. One responded, “I love you, too, Heather.” The other turned away.

Heather said she did not hate her mother but was unable to explain her actions. She said that her parents tried to get her the help she needed but that it came too late.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you,” she told her family. “I wasn’t able to stop myself.”

Her lawyer, Paul Pfingst, said this was the most unusual and inexplicable case he had seen in a career of more than 30 years as a prosecutor and defense lawyer.

Pfingst said he had mixed feelings about the outcome but that Heather wanted to be locked up.

“She’s afraid of what happens if she’s not in a controlled environment,” Pfingst said. “She remembers the days on the outside as being bad days — chaos inside of her mind.”

He said Heather likely would have to serve 16 years before she is eligible for parole.

Deputy District Attorney Rick Clabby has said the case was resolved reasonably.

Rebecca D’Aoust’s body was found on the kitchen floor of the family’s home on May 25, 2008. She died at a hospital the next day.

According to court documents, Heather said she and her mother had been arguing over little things for about a year before the attack. The day before the fatal attack, mother and daughter argued when Heather was caught in her bedroom engaging in a sex act with a girl.

Later that evening, Heather went to dinner with her parents and convinced herself that she should kill them. Her sister’s boyfriend was the first to wake up the next morning. Heather hid until he left the house.

She told the probation officer that the hammer was tucked inside a pocket of her clothing when she greeted Rebecca D’Aoust in the kitchen shortly after 8 a.m. It knocked against the refrigerator door when her mother asked her to get the orange juice.

After a brief argument about medication, Heather said she counted to three and struck her mother in the head.

She remembered her mother asking, “What are you doing?” then screaming. Heather said she kept hitting until the screams stopped.

Awakened by the noise, James D’Aoust ran downstairs and grabbed Heather as she tried to flee. He pinned her down while his oldest daughter called 911.

Sierra Halseth Charged With Fathers Murder

Sierra Halseth teen killer photos

Sierra Halseth is a sixteen year old girl from Las Vegas Nevada who along with her boyfriend eighteen year old Aaron Guerrero would brutally stab her father to death. According to court documents Sierra Halseth and Aaron Guerrero would plan out the murder which included a shopping trip to Home Depot to buy a circular saw, a hand saw and gloves. Sierra father Daniel Halseth would be brutally stabbed to death before the teens attempted to dismembered him. In the end the two teens would set his body on fire in the garage which would spread to other areas of the residence. Both Sierra Halseth and Aaron Guerrero were charged with murder, conspiracy, arson, robbery and fraudulent use of a credit card

Sierra Halseth More News

A Las Vegas teenage couple charged in the slaying of the 16-year-old girl’s father recorded video of themselves laughing together after the fatal stabbing, prosecutors said Friday.

Sierra Halseth and her 18-year-old boyfriend, Aaron Guerrero, are accused of killing 45-year-old Daniel Halseth in early April before fleeing to Salt Lake City, where they were later apprehended.

On the girl’s phone, investigators found a video of the teens lying together, Chief Deputy District Attorney Pamela Weckerly said Friday as the two were indicted on charges of murder, conspiracy, arson, robbery and fraudulent use of a credit card.

On video, the two “announce that this is their YouTube channel, and it’s been three days since the murder,” Weckerly told Chief Judge Linda Bell, who ordered the two held without bail. “And they kind of laugh about the fact that Aaron Guerrero committed the murder in exchange for … having sex with Sierra Halseth.”

Daniel Halseth’s body was found badly burned April 9 in the garage of his northwest Las Vegas home, near Durango and Alta drives. It appeared that the killers tried to dismember his body, according to Weckerly

The living room and backyard of the home had also been burned, the prosecutor said. Throughout the home, investigators found Home Depot and ATM receipts. Surveillance video from Home Depot showed Guerrero buying saws and gloves that were later found inside the Halseth home, Weckerly said, while ATM surveillance video showed Sierra Halseth using her father’s debit cards.

Sierra Halseth and Guerrero dated from June to December but were kept from seeing each other after their parents learned they planned to run away to Los Angeles, according to court documents.

Sierra Halseth and her two older siblings also were at the center of a bitter custody battle between Daniel Halseth and his first ex-wife, former state Sen. Elizabeth Halseth, who remarried and now goes by the name Elizabeth Helgelien.

In August, Daniel Halseth was ordered to return Sierra to her mother’s custody after a judge found that he was in violation of their agreement, records show.

The day before Daniel Halseth’s body was found, Guerrero ran away from home and the teenagers purchased a circular saw, saw blades, bleach, lighter fluid, disposable gloves and drop cloth from stores near the victim’s home, according to police reports.

Guerrero’s attorney, Gabriel Grasso, said he had not read the indictment and declined to comment Friday. Sierra Halseth’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

Sierra Halseth Other News

A teenage girl and her boyfriend charged with killing her father in Las Vegas laughed about “murdering somebody” and then having lots of sex in a deranged cellphone video they recorded while still on the lam.

The shocking footage, obtained by KLAS, is being used by prosecutors as evidence against Aaron Guerrero, 18, and his 16-year-old girlfriend, Sierra Halseth, the daughter of a former Nevada state senator.

“Welcome back to our YouTube channel … Day 3 after murdering somebody …,” Guerrero, with a smirk on his face, says into the camera.

“Whoa! Don’t put that on camera,” Halseth replies while giggling.

“It was worth it,” Guerrero adds before pecking his girlfriend on the forehead.

The teen girl then brags how they “had sex a lot today,” which her boyfriend mumbles was “payment for doing it.”

He then softly slapped her face and put his hand around her throat, with Halseth pretending to choke before finally looking at the camera with her eyes wide, saying casually, “So, yeah.”

The apparent admission was filmed in April, six days after they allegedly killed Halseth’s father, Daniel Halseth, 45, attempting to dismember him and setting fire to his house, the report said.

They then fled in the father’s blue Nissan Altima, but were caught less than a week later in Salt Lake City while allegedly planning to flee to California.

The father was murdered after the teens were told by their parents they could no longer be together, KLAS reported, citing police.

They stabbed him and then attempted to set fire to and dismember his body — using his bank cards to buy items used in the gruesome crime, police told the local station.

Prosecutors presented to the grand jury photos that included the daughter buying bleach, and her boyfriend buying a saw, lighter fluid and gloves, the report said.

They were also shown images of the blood-soaked crime scene, with knives, saws, the lighter fluid and burned material, the station said.

A blood-soaked rug was found in the trunk of his vehicle, which they used as a getaway car, KLAS said.

The smoke-filled crime scene was discovered after Daniel Halseth’s mother, Christine Halseth, couldn’t get hold of him — and grew increasingly suspicious of her granddaughter’s explanations, according to text messages obtained by KLAS.

“His phone has been acting up, but he’s okie,” the teen texted her concerned grandmother at some point, according to the texts. “It should be all fixed by tomorrow night, no worries :)” she reportedly wrote.

The next day, Christine Halseth asked her granddaughter, “Why are you doing this? … Now the police are involved,” according to KLAS.

Despite being just 16, the daughter has been charged as an adult, but cannot face the death penalty, KLAS said of Nevada state law.

Along with the murder charges, the two have been indicted on charges of conspiracy, arson, robbery and fraudulent use of a credit card.

As he is 18, Guerrero can potentially face the death penalty. His attorney, Gabriel Grasso, told the station that the case will be reviewed by the district attorney’s office next week.

Sierra’s mother, Elizabeth Halseth, was once a GOP state senator who was elected at 27 as the youngest person to the Nevada Senate in 2010, the Las Vegas Review-Journal has reported. She has since remarried and has not yet spoken publicly about the allegations against her daughter.

The dead man’s family told KLAS in a statement that he was “first and foremost a loving father, brother, and son, who was the heart of the Halseth family.”

“To have him taken from us in such a horrific, savage, senseless, and violent act of murder leaves us heartbroken, and our grief is unyielding,” the family said.

“The total lack of remorse on display in the video is both reprehensible and unforgivable.”

The family said it is “waiting for justice to be served with the maximum accountability allowed.”

“We loved Dan very much and we miss him every moment of the day,” the statement said.
