Michael Lelko Buries Mother And Sister In Backyard

michael lelko

Michael Lelko has been arrested after police found the bodies of his mother and sister buried in his backyard. According to police reports Michael Lelko has been cashing in on his social security for years and when a welfare check was performed on the house the bodies of his mother and sister were found shoved into plastic tubs that were wrapped in duct tape.

Now Michael Lelko would tell police that his sister murdered their mother by pushing her down a flight of stairs and his sister would later die from COVID-19. The problem with the sister’s death is that she reportedly died of COVID-19 before any cases were reported in the United States. So far Michael Lelko has been charged with two felony counts of concealment of a death. Michael Lelko brother was also arrested however has not been charged with anything so far.

One of two brothers from Lyons were released from custody Friday after a court hearing on charges alleging he buried his mother and their sister in Tupperware containers in their backyard.

The case made headlines last August when the reclusive brothers told police the bodies had been stashed in the backyard for years.Sponsored Links$300K – $28.40/monthTerm Life InsuranceGet Quote

The motive? The brothers had been cashing their dead mother’s monthly $1,000 Social Security checks, police said Thursday.

“For the last six years they were cashing checks to their benefit … that they know would have stopped if the mother was reported dead,” Lyons Police Chief Thomas Herion told reporters.

The medical examiner’s office couldn’t determine a cause of death of the mother, Jean Lelko, 79, or the sister Jennifer Lelko, 44.

The older brother, Michael Lelko, 45, was charged with two felony counts of concealment of death. In a court hearing Friday, Cook County Judge Michael Kane released Lelko from custody until his next court date on May 5, court records show.

His younger brother was being questioned again by police to determine if he had participated in the burial. No charges have been announced.

Police said they were unable to prove the brothers had caused harm to the mother and sister when they died. “Drawing your own conclusions is always nice. But going by the facts, that’s where we stand today,” Herion said.

Surveillance video at a bank shows Michael Lelko had been cashing his mother’s Social Security checks, police said. An agent from the Social Security Administration will interview the brothers to determine if a federal fraud charge is warranted, Herion said.

The bodies were uncovered when police were called for a well-being check in the three-level home in the 3900 block of Center Avenue. The older brother allegedly told police they buried their mother in the yard in 2015 after their sister pushed her down a flight of stairs, causing a fatal head wound.

Herion said he interviewed the older brother himself and was skeptical of the claim, suspecting Michael Lelko was providing an excuse for a possible injury that would be found in the autopsy.

“To bring that up was suspicious to me,” Herion said.

The older brother also allegedly admitted he buried their sister after she had died. The younger brother first lied about his mother’s and sister’s whereabouts, saying they were out of town, but later admitted they were buried in the backyard, Herion said.

The older brother said the mother and sister were both ill and difficult to take care of, Herion said. “What was in their mind or what they did, it’s impossible to tell,” Herion said.

Their father died in a hospital in 2017, according to police.

The brothers were found in a dilapidated home with no working toilets and hundreds of bottles of urine and feces, but Herion dismissed that the brothers may have mental issues.

The men had been evaluated at a hospital shortly after police began digging for the bodies and released hours later, he said. “That’s not the pattern of someone who needs psychological care. That wasn’t a factor.”

The brothers were reclusive residents of Lyons, both born and raised there but never working a job, marrying or having children, Herion said. Their father had built the home and eventually divorced the mother.

Police are trying to take custody of the house, but it was still in possession of a bank because the family had a reverse mortgage, Herion said. Police have gutted the house, cleaned it, and took possession of piles of toys the brothers had accumulated.

“They had all kinds of toys, Star Wars toys and everything. It was piled up to the rafters. And we had to take all of these toys in because they were of value and inventory them. There was a small Star Wars statue worth $250 on eBay,” Herion said.

“They spent all this money on all these toys that sat in boxes they never even took out of shopping bags. It’s just bizarre,” he said.

When the bodies were discovered, police took the brothers into custody but released them without charges. Police had been awaiting autopsy results and DNA tests that were finally completed last month.

“We’re glad to see this over with. It took a long time but it was out of our hands,” Herion said.

Bond has been set at $1 million each for the Peoria parents accused of murdering their 8-year-old son.

Stephanie Jones, 35, and Brandon Walker, 40, appeared in court Thursday as grim details emerged on the death of their son, Navin Jones. The pair are being charged with first-degree murder and face up to a natural life sentence.

They were arrested Wednesday after Peoria County Coroner revealed Navin died of physical abuse due to neglect.

Prosecutors revealed police were initially dispatched to the Jones home on reports of an unresponsive child. Before they arrived, Stephanie found him unresponsive and put him in the shower to warm him up.

As first responders arrived at the home, they found Stephanie performing life-saving measures as she was instructed to do so over the phone. They removed Navin from the bathroom as soon as they arrived.

Navin’s body was severely emaciated and showed clear signs of abuse, such as sunken eye sockets, visible bones, and ligature marks. He was exceedingly malnourished, and at the time of his death, Navin weighed just 30 pounds, according to prosecutors.

Officers also found ropes attached to both the boy’s closet and bedroom door. They said his room also reeked of urine and feces.

When asked why ropes were attached to the doors, Stephanie and Walker said they were there to keep Navin from getting out and breaking things in the house. They specified the ropes on the closet door were to keep the boy from getting into the closet.

Navin’s grandmother was the previous legal guardian, according to court records. She had returned Navin back to his parents at the end of summer 2021, and Navin was living with his parents again by fall 2021.

Prosecutors also asked why Stephanie and Walker did not take Navin to an emergency room when it was clear he was malnourished. The pair responded, saying they did not have legal guardianship status, and they could not seek medical attention for Navin.

Brandon Walker specifically blamed DCFS, saying every time he and Stephanie would try to take Navin to the emergency room, the organization would get involved. He also blamed the organization for not giving them papers to become Navin’s legal guardians.

Thursday, a spokesperson for DCFS confirmed there had been prior contact with Navin Jones’ family. What the extent of those visits were is not known at this time.

The last time anyone observed Navin in a healthy manner was between late October and early November 2021, prosecutors alleged.

Navin’s parents claimed after leaving the custody of his grandmother, Navin had behavioral issues. They said he had a habit of drinking urine and throwing feces.

Stephanie and Walker are due back in court for an arraignment hearing on April 28 at 1:30 p.m

Bryant Marshall Gets 65 Years For Marlene Brown Murder

bryant marshall

Bryant Marshall has just been sentenced to 65 years in prison for the murder of Marlene Brown in Danville Illinois. According to court documents Bryant Marshall waited for Marlene Brown in the back of her SUV following an argument where he accused her of sleeping with other men. When Marlene Brown went to the back of her SUV Bryant Marshall would jump out and shoot her multiple times. Marlene Brown was rushed to a hospital where she would die from her injuries ten days later. Bryant Marshall who confessed to the murder would be arrested and would later plead guilty to murder.

Bryant Marshall More News

A man who used to live in Danville was sentenced to 65 years in prison this week for murdering his girlfriend in Dec. of 2018.

Bryant Marshall pleaded guilty earlier this year to murdering 29-year-old Marlene Brown. Court testimony established that Marshall began to suspect Brown of seeing other men, which culminated in an argument between the two on Dec. 15, 2018 at Brown’s home in Danville. Marshall threated Brown’s life during the argument and afterward, he hid himself inside her SUV with a gun.

When Brown went out to her car and opened the back hatch, Marshall was said to have jumped out of the car and shot her several times in the head. He was arrested later that night and fully confessed to the crime. Brown died from her injuries ten days later on Christmas morning.

During Marshall’s sentencing hearing, Katherline Smith, Brown’s sister, tearfully addressed the court and described the devastation her sister’s death had brought upon her family. Smith further expressed the adverse mental and emotional impact that the murder had upon Brown’s six children.

“They now have trust issues, they have permanent psychological scars, the perception of their world has changed, they fear the world now, and
their hearts are forever broken, as nothing or no one can replace that nurturing love they had from their mother,” Smith noted.

In rendering his judgement, Judge Derek Girton addressed Bryant Marshall specifically, saying his crime was “beyond senseless” and that Marshall himself was “beyond selfish.” The court noted that such a sentence was necessary to deter others from committing similar acts in the future.

Marshall must serve 100% of his sentence, followed by three years of supervised release after. He will also be required to register as a murderer for 10 years in accordance with the Illinois Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registration Act

Bryant Marshall Other News

Bryant Marshall, formerly of Danville, Illinois, was sentenced today by Vermilion County Judge Derek Girton to sixty-five (65) years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the First Degree Murder of Marlene Brown. The sentence must be served at one hundred percent (100%), and his sentence will be followed by three (3) years of Mandatory Supervised Release (i.e., Parole).  Also, upon completion of his prison sentence, Marshall will be required to register as a Murderer pursuant to the Illinois Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registration Act for ten (10) years.

Marshall pleaded guilty to the charge earlier this year, and at today’s sentencing hearing, Judge Girton heard details surrounding the crime.  Marshall and Ms. Brown had a dating relationship, but Marshall unjustifiably began to suspect Ms. Brown of seeing other men. This misapprehension led to the two arguing at her residence on the 300 block of North Washington Street, Danville, Illinois, on December 15, 2018.

During the course of arguing with Ms. Brown, Marshall threatened her life. After the argument, rather than return to his own apartment, Marshall concealed himself in the back of Ms. Brown’s sport utility vehicle that was parked on the roadway just outside her home. He lay in wait, armed with a handgun. When the back hatch was opened, Marshall jumped from the vehicle and, in the middle of the street, fired multiple rounds into the head of his victim. Marshall was apprehended late that night, and he provided a full confession to law enforcement.  Ten days later, on Christmas morning, then only twenty-nine (29) year old Marlene Brown succumbed to the injuries inflicted.

During the sentencing hearing, Ms. Brown’s eldest sister, Katherline Smith, addressed the Court, and she tearfully described the overwhelming devastation that Marshall’s crime has wrought upon her family.  Most notably, Ms. Smith expressed the adverse physical, mental, and emotional impact the murder has had upon the victim’s six (6) children. She noted, “They now have trust issues, they have permanent psychological scars, the perception of their world has changed, they fear the world now, and their hearts are forever broken, as nothing or no one can replace that nurturing love they had from their mother.”

Judge Girton, in rendering his judgment, addressed Marshall specifically. His Honor poignantly noted that Marshall’s crime was “beyond senseless,” and that Marshall himself was “beyond selfish.” The Court further noted that the significant sentence was necessary to deter others from committing similar acts in violence. Such acts, as the Judge noted, unfortunately continue to escalate not just across this Country, but specifically here in Vermilion County
