Sydney Powell Case

An Ohio woman bludgeoned her mother with a frying pan and stabbed her dozens of times after her parents found out she was kicked out of college for poor grades.

Sydney Powell, 23, of Akron, was convicted last week of two counts of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence for the killing of 50-year-old Brenda Powell in the family’s home, according to the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.

Sydney, who had been out on bail since her arraignment, sobbed when the jury verdict was read in Summit County Common Pleas Court. She was immediately taken into custody.

“We are disappointed with the jury’s verdict. We felt that the science overwhelmingly proved insanity, and we will file an appeal,” Sydney’s attorney, Donald Malarcik, told Fox News Digital.

On March 3, 2020, Sydney’s father, Steven Powell, could not access the portal to pay her tuition, setting in motion that afternoon’s deadly confrontation with her mother.

Sydney, then 19, confessed to her father that she had been expelled from Mount Union University and had been keeping it a secret for months, according to CourtTV.

She had failed three of her four classes in December 2019 but continued to live on campus and attend sorority meetings until school officials evicted her from her dorm on Feb. 24, 2020.

For a week, the young woman stayed in hotels rather than tell her parents the truth

After Steven told his wife about the weeks-long deceit, she returned home from her job at Akron Children’s Hospital as a child life specialist to discuss the matter with her daughter.

School officials testified that while they were on the phone with Brenda, they heard repeated thuds and screaming, then the call disconnected.

One of the officials tried to call back, and Sydney answered, pretending to be her mother. However, the official did not buy it and called police.

Prosecutors say that Sydney repeatedly beat her mother in the head with the cast-iron skillet then retrieved a steak knife and stabbed her nearly 30 times.

“She had to switch weapons and keep attacking her,” assistant prosecutor Brian Stano told jurors. “That is purposeful. That is trying to end someone.”

After the attack, Sydney shattered a window to stage a break-in, according to prosecutors.

When police arrived, Sydney Powell said an intruder had entered the house, that her mother told her to run and, upon her return, she found her mother on the floor.

Her attorneys admitted that Sydney killed her mother but argued that she suffered from schizophrenia and could not appreciate at that moment that her actions were wrong. Her father and grandmother testified on her behalf, but the jury rejected the insanity defense.

Sylvia O’Bradovich, a psychologist hired by prosecutors, acknowledged that Sydney suffered from mental illness but argued that she understood right from wrong when she brutally lashed out at her mother.

Mackenzie Shirilla would go to trial where she would be found guilty and now faces an automatic sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for fifteen years

Mackenzie Shirilla Other News

An Ohio judge found a teenager guilty of murder, ruling she intentionally drove her car into a brick building at 100 mph to kill her boyfriend and another passenger.

On Monday, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Nancy Margaret Russo found Mackenzie Shirilla, 19, of Strongsville, guilty on all 12 charges she faced including murder, aggravated vehicular homicide, felonious assault and drug possession for a 2022 crash that killed her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, 20, and a friend, Davion Flanagan, 19, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The conviction carries an automatic sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years, Cleveland.com reports.

Shirilla sobbed uncontrollably as the judge addressed the court, 3News reports.

“This was not reckless driving,” Russo said just before she handed down her verdict Monday, 3News reports. “This was murder.”

“She had a mission and she executed it with precision,” said Russo, who is not related to the victim. “The decision was death.”

According to Strongsville Police, in the early morning hours of July 31, 2022, Shirilla was driving a 2018 Toyota Camry with Russo in the front seat and Flanagan in the back seat.

The three had allegedly been smoking marijuana at a friend’s home before she got behind the wheel, Cleveland.com reports.

Shirilla allegedly had THC in her system that exceeded the legal limit in Ohio, Cleveland.com reports.

She was not charged with driving under the influence, but with murder.

According to surveillance video prosecutors showed in court, Shirilla was seen driving on Progress Drive in the Progress Drive Business Park at a normal speed.

When she turned onto Alameda Drive, she became “literal hell on wheels,” the judge said.

Shirilla was seen accelerating before jerking the wheel to the right and left before slamming into a brick building at 100 mph, leaving her and her passengers trapped in the twisted metal wreckage.

Her fuzzy Prada slipper was stuck to the gas pedal, Cleveland.com reports

“The intent was obvious upon seeing that video that there was only one goal, and the computer demonstrated that there was no attempt to slow down or stop — that it was full speed into a building and tragically it cost two people their lives,” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley said after the verdict came down, 3News reports.

Prosecutors maintained that Shirilla wanted to end her turbulent relationship with Russo, 3 News reports.

“There is no doubt that this happened because of the relationship with Dominic and the defendant’s intent was clearly to end that, and she took everybody that was in the car with her,” O’Malley said, 3News reports.

Russo and Flanagan were pronounced dead at the scene. Shirilla was unconscious and not breathing when she was found trapped inside the car with the others, 3News reports.

Shirilla’s attorney James McDonnell could not be reached for comment. But in court, he said prosecutors never proved that she intentionally crashed the car and that she could have lost control of the vehicle. “It’s not clear, it’s not explicit to draw the inference that she acted purposely,” McDonnell told the judge, Fox 8 reports.

Shirilla’s mother said her daughter will appeal her conviction.

GoFundMe accounts were started in memory of Flanagan and Russo after their deaths.

Kelly Dale Vokas More News

A former neighbor has been sentenced to decades in prison in the slayings of a couple during an attempted robbery at the victims’ home.

A Franklin County judge on Friday sentenced Kelly Dale Vokas, 43, to 37 years to life in the deaths of John Blanc, 77, and Susan Castore, 75, in October 2020, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Vokas pleaded guilty in December to murder, involuntary manslaughter and aggravated burglary in an agreement with county prosecutors who withdrew other charges including two counts of aggravated murder. The sentence imposed by Judge Michael Holbrook was the maximum possible on the charges.

A sheriff’s deputy testifying at the sentencing hearing said authorities called to the Prairie Township home after a 911 hang-up call saw the defendant shoving items in her purse and then trying to flee out the back door. In her purse they found the victims’ ID cards, a checkbook and a bag of coins, he said.

Entering the home, deputies found Blanc unresponsive in the first-floor bathroom with six stab wounds to his head and neck and Castore unresponsive in the basement with stab wounds and a rope tied around her head, neck and body, he said.

Vokas, who cried throughout the hearing, apologized to the victims’ families, saying she was not in her “right state of mind.” Defense attorney Francisco Luttecke said his client had an abusive childhood and was dealing with mental health issues and using drugs.

Julie Blanc, John Blanc’s daughter, called the couple an inspiration who lived their lives helping others

Landon Parrott Gets Life For Murder Of Son

Landon Parrott

Landon Parrott is a twenty year old man from New Philadelphia Ohio who was just sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his fourteen month old son. According to court documents Landon Parrott would intentionally place his fourteen month old son in a car during a very hot day and proceeded to leave him there for the next five hours. Police in New Philadelphia estimate the temperature in the vehicle was above 130 degrees Fahrenheit. 14 month old Kyler Parrott would die from his injuries.

Landon Parrott initially told police that he left his son in the car in order to use the restroom however his story would fall apart when videos from a house across the street showed Landon Parrott placing the toddler in the car and leaving him. Landon Parrott would eventually plead guilty and was sentenced to life in prison with no shot at parole for 15 years.

Landon Parrott More News

Vanessa Fraser-Parrott fought back tears as she told her husband what it meant to her that he killed their 14-month-old son, Kyler, by leaving him in a hot car Sept. 1.

“These last five months have been absolute hell,” she told Landon S. Parrott at his sentencing hearing Thursday. “You killed my reason to live. You took my whole world away from me and lied about it to everyone. You left my baby alone and scared for six hours.

“No ruling can ever make amends for your actions and nothing can bring him back. But I will be at every parole hearing to make sure you don’t ever get released. This is my final goodbye to you. Rot in hell.”

Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Judge Michael J. Ernest sentenced Parrott on Thursday to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years, a sentence dictated by state law

The judge told the defendant that if he were to be released, the only thing he could do to make amends “would be to live the best life you possibly can for Kyler, to show him the man that you should have been on that day, but weren’t.”

Given the chance to speak at sentencing, Parrott said, “I’m sorry for the pain that I caused Vanessa and the pain that I caused her family and the pain I caused my family. I was supposed to be a provider for my son and a provider for Vanessa and I was terrible at that

He expressed the hope that his brother and sister can learn to love him and be present for him “even though I haven’t been the best big brother.”

Vanessa said she was not certain Landon could understand the hole he left in her heart when she comes home and Kyler isn’t there.

She recalled that she learned she was pregnant as a 19-year-old recent high school graduate still living with her mother. She said her love for Kyler grew as he grew and developed.

“His first laugh, his first words, his first sentence, I was there for all of them,” Vanessa said.

She ended her statement in court by addressing her son

“Mommy loves you so much. Rest in perfect peace, Kyler. Mommy will see you again someday.”

Assistant County Prosecutor Scott Deedrick extended his condolences to those who knew Kyler.

“I am unable to really come to grips with how Kyler, who should have really been protected, nurtured and loved, should have instead suffered and been killed so horribly by the recklessness of the defendant,” he said.

Deedrick commended the New Philadelphia Police Department, the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital emergency department staff and the staff of the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office for their “quick and decisive action” which uncovered the circumstances.

Kyler died after being left alone in a car near the family’s apartment in the 500 block of Ashwood Lane NW. Police Chief Michael Goodwin previously said that the toddler was left in the vehicle deliberately so he would “not be a disturbance while in the house.”

Gregory Esparza Death Sentence Overturned

Gregory Esparza

Gregory Esparza has been on Ohio Death Row for nearly forty years and now he is not only off of death row he may be eligible for parole. The Supreme Court ruled that his original death sentence was unconstitutional and he would be resentenced to thirty years to life. Gregory Esparza who was orginaly sentenced to death for murdering a store clerk during a robbery

Gregory Esparza More News

An Ohio prison inmate who has spent nearly four decades on death row in the murder of a convenience store clerk has been resentenced to a term that could allow his release on parole.

Lucas County Judge Stacy Cook vacated Gregory Esparza’s death sentence and imposed a new term of 30 years to life with credit for time served, The (Toledo) Blade reported. Two months ago, Cook had declared capital punishment unconstitutional in the case because prosecutors had failed to disclose evidence in his original trial.

“God is good for everyone,” Esparza said to relatives Friday as he was escorted from the courtroom back to the county jail.

Esparza, now 60, was convicted in 1984 of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery with gun specifications in the February 1983 death of Melanie Gerschutz. The 38-year-old wife and mother was working the cash register at Island Variety in East Toledo when she was shot during a robbery of $110 from the register,

Esparza’s initial appeals were denied but a public records request in 1991 turned up a large number of police reports, interviews, and other documents never given to his defense attorneys. A federal appeals court in 1995 overturned the death sentence citing a “defective indictment,” but the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the decision. A 2016 appeal was denied on the grounds that federal courts had assessed the 1991 evidence, but a state appellate court later said no court had yet addressed the 1991 evidence in the context of capital punishment.

Cook wrote that although prosecutors may have been unaware of the 1991 evidence, the defense should have had it. More importantly, she said, some of the evidence indicated that Esparza didn’t act alone and therefore “may not have been the principal offender,” so the death penalty could not be imposed.

In Friday’s hearing, Esparza said he had been just 21 and a “confused, lost soul” at the time of the crime but the rigors of life on death row for so long had helped him mature.

“God knows I am not a killer,” he said. “Even when offered life without parole if I gave up my appeals, I chose execution.”

Marsha Raymond, Gerschutz’s daughter, a teenager at the time of her mother’s slaying, told the court that the defendant “committed murder in cold blood.”

“I am so grateful that I had such an amazing mom, but unfortunately because of his actions my family fell apart,” she said. “My dad couldn’t speak about my mom, and he (Esparza) talks about a young child being abused? My younger brother was six years old. He has no memories of my mother.”

Julia Esparza, Esparza’s sister, said the family was happy to see this day come.

“It has been very emotional,” she told the newspaper. “We appreciate the justice system.”
