An East Texas cold case has been solved seven years after a person revealed unreleased details and the suspect’s confession to police in the murder of a father and daughter.
Lance Kaeden Rains, 25 of Chandler, was taken into custody on Saturday after confessing to the murders of 17-year-old daughter, Beverly McBride, and her father, 47-year-old Gabriel McBride.
KETK News obtained arrest documents from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office revealing new case details. Investigators were called to a residence in Chandler, where they discovered that the victims had been shot with a firearm multiple times.
The investigation turned cold until June 2, 2024, when an unnamed friend of the suspect, Lance Kaeden Rains, reported to investigators details unknown to the public.
“[Unnamed friend] reported during the interview that Beverly McBride was on the couch at the time of the offense and that Rains was sitting in a chair next to her when the shooting occurred,” the affidavit said.
The friend also included the description of the revolver that belonged to Rains’ grandparents.
Investigators spoke with Rains’ grandmother, who confirmed she owned the revolver, but had gifted it in 2021 as a birthday present. A laboratory report later confirmed that the revolver was used in the murders. Rains would eventually confess during an interview with authorities.
While the motive for the murders is still unconfirmed, Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse believes Rains was trying to obtain marijuana from Gabriel. “He had gotten marijuana from him in the past,” Hillhouse said. “So it’s really kind of unknown, but he went over there with a weapon and it leads me to believe he went over there to rob him.”
Henderson County Investigator Sherry Powers says Rains and the victims were neighbors and that he didn’t hate the pair. “He actually grew up with Beverly; they had previous relationships when they were small children, but they grew up with each other and knew each other for years,” Powers said.
Rains is being charged with capital murder of multiple persons and remains in the Henderson County Jail on a $2 million bond. Hillhouse said Rain’s case will be seen by a grand jury within the next ninety days.
