According to police reports officers would go to the Tell City Indiana home in response to a 911 call regarding an unresponsive toddler. When officers arrived at the home they would find two year old Erik Reichard already dead. The little boy weighed just fifteen pounds at the time of his death

Investigators would learn that Erik Reichard was eating drywall chips, paint chips and his diaper in order to fill his empty stomach. Investigators would also find a severely neglected home with trash spread through out and a infestation of insects

Two other children were removed from the home with one being rushed to the hospital due to severe malnutrition

A man and woman in Southern Indiana were arrested and charged with murder after the death of a toddler this week.

In a press release, Tell City Police said they were called to a home for an unresponsive child on Tuesday. The boy, identified as 2-year-old Erik Reichard, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not say how the boy died.

On Friday, following an investigation, police arrested 39-year-old Trevor Reichard-Hayes and 31-year-old Katherine Carter. It’s not clear what their relationship to the boy was.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the death of a two-year-old child following an investigation by local authorities in Tell City.

According to the Tell City Police Department, officers responded to a home at 81 Guttenberg Lane at approximately 1:19 p.m. on March 31, after receiving a 911 call reporting an unresponsive child.

Upon arrival, officers assessed the child and were assisted by Perry County Emergency Medical Services. Authorities said the child, identified as 2-year-old Erik Reichard, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police detectives and officers remained at the home for an extended period as part of the investigation. Additional assistance was provided by the Perry County Coroner’s Office, the Perry County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Indiana Department of Child Services.

Authorities said two other children were removed from the home with the assistance of the Indiana Department of Child Services as the investigation unfolded.

Following a joint investigation, police said on April 3, Trevor Reichard-Hayes, 39, and Katherine Carter, 31, were arrested in connection with the child’s death. Both were taken into custody and lodged in the Perry County Detention Center.

Tell City Police Department stated they are facing multiple charges, including:

Murder
Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death
Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury
Neglect of a Dependent
“Scenes such as these are extremely difficult for the officers, first responders, and partner agencies involved. We respectfully ask for and appreciate your prayers and support for the investigators as well as the victim’s family during this difficult time,” Tell City Police stated.

The investigation remains ongoing.
