A woman has been accused of killing a man she met on a dating app in a hit-and-run incident in Arizona.
At around 4 p.m. local time on Sunday, May 3, the Phoenix Police Department (PPD) received reports that a man had been run over by an SUV in an apartment complex parking lot on Maryland Avenue in Phoenix, according to Cleveland 19 News, Fox 10 Phoenix and ABC15 Arizona. The driver allegedly fled the scene of the incident.
Officers found 52-year-old Norris Taft critically injured. He was taken to a hospital where he later died, per the outlets.
Mikela Bahe was arrested in connection with the incident three days later.
Taft’s nephew told investigators that while on the phone at around 12:56 p.m Taft told him that he was on his way to meet a woman whom he had met on Mocospace, per ABC 15 Arizona and Cleveland 19 News.
The nephew later received a text from Taft claiming to have been “catfished” by the woman, as she didn’t resemble the person he matched with on the app. According to the outlets, Taft told his nephew that he would try to return the woman to her home.
Having picked the woman up in his SUV, the pair went to a dispensary before heading back to Taft’s apartment, per the outlets. Police believe that during their date, the pair argued, leading to Taft being run over with his car, ABC 15 Arizona reported, citing court documents.
In surveillance footage reviewed by the outlet, a woman is seen leaving the apartment complex and entering a dark-colored SUV. A man then enters the parking lot and steps in front of the moving SUV. The SUV runs the man over and drags him underneath the vehicle before driving away.
Police identified Bahe, 30, as a suspect after obtaining a security video of her boarding a shuttle heading to Flagstaff at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, according to CBS 5 and Fox 10 Phoenix. She was charged on May 6 with second-degree murder, leaving the scene of an accident and theft of means of transportation.
Taft’s vehicle has still not been found, per the outlets.
Bahe told investigators that she remembered being with the victim and being in Phoenix around the time of the incident, ABC 15 Arizona reported, citing court documents. However, she claimed not to recall anything that happened after they left the dispensary.
After being shown the surveillance footage, Bahe still insisted that she couldn’t remember what happened, per the outlet.
She is being held at Maricopa County Jail on a $1 million cash bond.
